The Arts Club Theatre Company is proud to present ReACT: New Plays in
Progress, our 3rd annual public reading series taking place Jan 16-25,
2003 on the Granville Island Stage.  Don't miss this opportunity to peek
behind-the-scenes as some of Vancouver's most talented actors,
directors, dramaturgs and Canadian playwrights bring new scripts to
life. All performances will include a reading of the artist's play,
followed by a talkback with the cast, director, dramaturg and
playwright. Here is a sneak preview of this year's playwrights:
 
FISHNETS by David King
Thursday, January 16 at 8pm and Friday, January 24 at 8pm - Reading and
Talkback
 
Fishnets tells the tale of the struggling Club Morocco, a down and out
burlesque club in Vancouver circa 1969. Eddie De Vega, the club's emcee,
has only two weeks to turn the club around - otherwise the Lundy
Brothers, notorious gangsters from Edmonton, will turn the club into a
strip joint. A motley crew of artists band together to try to save
burlesque. Their efforts culminate in a rousing performance of the Hard
Candy Revue. Cast features Jay Brazeau, Earl Pastko, Emelia
Symington-Fedy and Allan Zinyk
 
THE MATKA KING by Anosh Irani
Friday, January 17 at 8pm and Saturday, January 25 at 8pm -Reading and
Talkback
 
The Matka King takes you through a landscape of betrayal and redemption
in a story that pits human nature against chance. Imagine. the red light
district of Bombay, a colourful community of prostitutes, gamblers, and
one very powerful eunuch, Top Rani.  Top Rani operates an illicit
lottery through his brothel, and when a gambler who is deeply in debt
makes an unexpected wager, the stakes become life and death.  Can a
fortune-teller and a ten-year-old girl beat Top Rani at his own game?
Cast features Layla Alizada, Marcus Hondro, Denis Simpson, and Sanjay
Talwar, 
 
AFTER THE GOLD RUSH by Sherman Snukal
Saturday, January 18 at 8pm - Reading and Talkback
 
On the eve of his daughter's wedding, Harvey Hartt looks back on the
rocky road that his family has traveled over the last 14 years. In 1988
Harvey and Debbie Hartt were a young married couple with two children.
They had no money but were full of ambition. After the Gold Rush follows
the story of the Harts' tumultuous marriage as they conquer financial
instability only to find themselves morally bankrupt. Cast features
Rebecca Auerbach, David Beazley, Tom Butler, Adam Henderson, Nick Ko,
Suzie Payne and Howard Seigel
 
SEXY LAUNDRY by Michele Riml
Thursday, January 23 at 8pm - Reading and Talkback
Henry and Alice Lane are a fifty something couple wrestling with a
lack-luster sex life. When sex gets too safe and foreplay feels like
forever, a marriage can get stuck in the spin cycle. Henry and Alice
take a two day retreat to put a little bounce back into a twenty year
relationship, only to find that when the clothes come off, so do the
gloves. Cast features Meredith Bain Woodward and Allan Morgan
