 EQUIFLASH: STAGE MANAGERS
--------------------------------------

Dear Colleague,

If you work under the CTA, please take the time to read this.

Many changes were made in this new CTA, most particularly regarding the
fee structure. These changes are intended to address any seeming
implication of employment status as regards performers, directors and
choreographers. However, most of these changes will affect the stage
management community to some degree as well.

In addition, there is an important amendment to (new) Article 63:00
Stage Management, which is not clearly annotated in the ratification
package.

The new CTA now requires that all stage management personnel shall be
hired as employees of the Theatre. This change is a reflection of PACT's
long-time directive to member theatres to hire SMs only as employees.

Our 1999 mail survey showed a consistent 38% self-employment rate across
the country, and this topic has long been one of vigorous discussion, so
we recognize that this latter change may be of great interest to some of
our membership.

The national office is organising an information meeting on the new CTA
for stage managers and others in Toronto this coming Monday, July 28, in
the Nathan Cohen Studio of LKTYP (Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young
People, 165 Front St. E. at Frederick).

The meeting for SMs will start at 5 p.m., with a second meeting at 6:30
p.m. for the whole membership. SMs are, of course, welcome to stay for
the second meeting.

For those of you outside Toronto, or otherwise unable to attend, we
welcome your comments and questions to be shared at that meeting. Please
direct them to me by email at teichman at vaxxine.com. I will get responses
out to everyone as soon as possible after the meeting.
