AUDITIONS FOR "THE SECRET OF GABI'S DRESSER"
December 8 & 9, 2003

The Secret of Gabi's Dresser  is a [non-musical] play by Kathy Kacer,
the author of the book by the same name.  It is the true story of Gabi,
a young girl in Czechoslovakia, whose mother hid her in a dresser in
their dining room to save her from the Nazis.  The director is Virginia
Reh.

The production will run April 15 through 20, 2004 at the Miles Nadal JCC
(Bloor and Spadina).  The show runs about one hour and there will be one
or two shows each day.  (There will be two additional performances on
May 2nd.)  Rehearsals begin around March 31.  This is an Equity Theatre
For Young Audiences contract (for Equity members, Apprentices and those
eligible to become apprentices).  

Roles:  (there will be doubling, as indicated)

(1939 +)
Gabi (12-14):  She is Jewish and comes from an upper class rural
European family.  She is bright, inquisitive, optimistic. Marishka
(12-14):  She is also Jewish.  She is somewhat sarcastic and cynical,
and has a quick wit.  Her father owns a clothing store in town. Nina
(12-14):  She is Christian.  She is shy and quieter than the other two,
but becomes outspoken when she stands up to protect her friends. (one of
these two girls may double as Vera) Mamma (35):  A dignified European
lady. Papa (40):  A dignified European gentleman/farmer.  (doubles as
Stephan, Second Soldier) Ivan (16):  Nazi youth (Czech).  Boastful and
arrogant (doubles as Nazi Soldier)
Stephan:  An older man, a worker on the farm.
Eva (35):  Marishka's mother.
Nazi Soldier (25-30):  Nazi soldier.  Conducts search of the house.
Second Soldier:  Assists search of house.

Recent years
Babichka (60-70): Gabi, now a grandmother.  Warm, gentle, loving.
(doubles as Eva) Vera (10):  Gabi's granddaughter.  Bright and curious.
Paul (8):  Gabi's grandson.
