University of Victoria Department of Theatre
University Scholar in Applied Theatre
--------------------------------------------

University of Victoria's Department of Theatre is seeking a
scholar/practitioner in Applied Theatre. The candidate will have a Ph.D.
or M.F.A. and be in mid-stage career with extensive experience teaching
at the undergraduate and graduate levels. S/he will have knowledge of
and experience in the discipline of theatre and its application across a
wide variety of contexts; knowledge of and experience in teacher
training; an understanding of the role and potential application of
interdisciplinarity; and the ability to design opportunities for
outreach to a variety of disciplines. The appointment requires someone
who can see the potential for the contributions that Applied Theatre can
offer to the wider community at the university, local, and provincial
levels, and who understands the means by which those liaisons can be
most productively effected. The appointee will have a record of
innovative research and sound scholarship that is supported by
publications that demonstrate his/her contributions to the field.

Responsibilities:
The appointee will teach undergraduate and graduate courses designed to
apply the concept of theatre beyond its traditional performance and
production contexts, and to expand the definition of theatre to
encompass practice of the art-form as a means for human, political and
social transformation. The appointee will develop the necessary
connections between the Theatre department and those faculties and
schools that see the value of such liaisons. As an excellent teacher of
proven records, s/he will have the ability to attract and supervise
graduate students while engendering energy and commitment within the
undergraduate population.

As the holder of this prestigious position of University Scholar, the
appointee will be a recognized leader in the field with the potential
for achieving international recognition; a scholar/practitioner who can
bring a clearly articulated vision to the development of a new program
in applied Theatre within the Department of Theatre, Faculty of Fine
Arts, at the University of Victoria.

Located within a magnificently equipped Faculty of Fine Arts - comprised
of departments of Music, Visual Art, History in Art, and Writing - The
Department of Theatre offers five different university degrees: the
B.F.A. for students majoring in Performance; B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees
for Design, Production, and Directing majors; and the B.A. Honours,
B.F.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees for Theatre History majors. Our
purpose-built physical plant, the Phoenix Theatre Building, is one of
the finest teaching and performance facilities in the country, featuring
three state-of-the-art theatres, classrooms, studios and workshops, and
staffed by an outstanding team of dedicated and distinguished professors
and production personnel. In addition to our main-stage season, the
Phoenix is also home to The Student Alternative Theatre Company (SATCO),
which stages over a dozen completely student-driven works a year.

The University of Victoria is an equity employer and encourages
applications from women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities,
aboriginal peoples, people of all sexual orientations and genders, and
others who may contribute to the further diversification of the
University.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance
with Canadian Immigration requirements, Canadians and permanent
residents will be given priority.

A floor salary will be established by the university for this position
and will be appointed at the level of Associate Professor. It is
expected that the successful candidate will begin their duties on July
1, 2004.
