AUDITION - BENEATH THE BANYAN TREE
---------------------------------------

A play for young audiences produced by Sampradaya Dance Creations

A new culture, a different landscape, a foreign language. For young
Anjali, the journey from India to Canada has been colourful...and
complicated. Dance, masks and music are woven into Beneath the Banyan
Tree, a tale about the challenges - and rewards - of adapting to a new
country.

Sampradaya Dance Creations, one of Canada's leading South Asian dance
companies, is creating a delightful play for young audiences that will
be staged at a children's festival in June 2004 and will tour schools in
Autumn 2004. Four adult actors (Equity/Non-Equity) are required for the
following roles:

Anjali -- A young girl with a love for dance, Anjali struggles to her
place in the world as she bridges the gap between the country and
culture she left behind, and the country she now calls home.

Ajji - Anjali's colourful, traditional grandmother fears her
granddaughter will lose her sense of identity as she immerses herself in
a new environment.

Maitri - A wise, elderly talking tree living in India, Maitri keeps
Anjali rooted to her values but willing to branch out in new directions.

Mason - Like Anjali, Mason has tasted rejection first-hand. But his love
of music and her gift for dance opens the door to a blossoming
friendship.

The performers who play Ajji, Maitri and Mason will be required to play
multiple roles requiring physical agility. Mask and movement work are an
essential part of Beneath the Banyan Tree.

Auditions will take place on October 15 and 16 in downtown Toronto.

Please prepare a 2 - 3 minute monologue, and come prepared to do some
movement. Auditions are for a workshop of the new play; the workshop
will take place from October 20-22, 2003.
