Do you want to be a great actor? Then act truthfully.
Build a strong and flexible instrument through REPETITION.
What is repetition? Why repeat?
Repetition is an acting exercise developed by Sanford Meisner at the
Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. It is
the first element of Meisner's acting technique, and is a simple and
direct way for you to connect to other actors and your own truthful
behaviour. The goals are listening, answering and behaving truthfully
from moment to moment. Russell and his new teaching partner, Gillian,
will hone your instincts; consider them as your Personal Instinct
Trainers!

"Repetition is an exercise designed to eliminate all intellectuality
from the actor's instrument, and to make him a spontaneous responder to
where he is, what's happening to him, and what's being done to him." -
Sanford Meisner

A TASTE OF REPETITION is the beginner level workshop. This workshop is
for both beginners to the Meisner technique or Meisner-trained actors
wishing to refresh their skills. Russell's workshop gives you a safe,
nurturing environment to take risks and reveal your truthful behaviour.
You will experience dynamic exchanges between you and your acting
partner, deepening your ability to act on the stage or screen.
Repetition is the foundation for scene work in theatre, television and
film, and is required for other levels of the technique taught in
Russell and Gillian's intermediate and advanced workshops.

Russell Bennett and Gillian Stevens-Guille are both graduates of the
Neighbourhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. Other alumni include
Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, Sydney Pollock, Dylan
McDermott, Illeana Douglas and Allison Janney. At the Playhouse,
Russell and Gillian studied Meisner's acting technique with Richard
Pinter, Ron Stetson and Gary Kingston. Originally from Toronto, both
Russell and Gillian began repeating in 1996 in Toronto with Jacqueline
McClintock.

Before the first class, it is recommended that actors read the book
Sanford Meisner on Acting by Sanford Meisner and Dennis Longwell (New
York: Random House, 1987).
Comments from Russell's students:

"Russell's simple and direct approach makes the actor feel understood
and safe, allowing them to explore and take risks. Russell has the
innate ability to know what the actor is feeling. He is smart,
sensitive and has a finely-tuned instrument himself. But most
importantly, he doesn't let you get away with anything!" - Jason
Fraser, Actor, Graduate of the Neighbourhood Playhouse

"Russell's Repetition classes are amazing! He is truly a gifted
teacher, freely sharing his experience and passion for the craft with
us. His perceptiveness is a valuable attribute in class, as he is able
to tune in to our behaviour and call us on it...when needed! There have
been some challeging moments for me during the process, (and I'm sure
there will be more), but with Russell's encouragement and support I have
persevered and definitely grown as an actor. It is a fabulous feeling to
know you're in the right class." - Chezlene Kocian, Actor

"Russ has a keen sense of calling out the truth in all of us. He
chooses the perfect words to help us see the right path. This class is
fun!" - Dianna David, Actor and Dancer
