Text and Movement for the Actor: 
Training for Today's Interdisciplinary Theatrical Performance

A 5-day workshop taught by Conrad Alexandrowicz 
Sponsored by Canadian Actors' Equity Association

WHO:          Conrad Alexandrowicz, Artistic Director of Wild Excursions Performance, is an award-winning director, writer and choreographer based in Vancouver and Toronto. He has created over forty-five dance and physical-theatre works, which have been presented in New York, France, the U.K. and across Canada. His most recent work, The Singer Falls Silent won the Critics Choice Award for Innovation at the 2004 Jessie Awards. Conrad specializes in assisting actors to develop movement skills that expand their range of expression, confidence and creativity.

2. JAPANESE NOH THEATRE - VANCOUVER

Intensive 3-Day Workshop in Japanese Noh Theatre with Richard Emmert from Japan. A rare opportunity to study the acting style, dance and chant of Japanese classical Noh Theatre.

When:	
August 27, 28, 29, 2004 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) 9:00am - 4:30pm Daily

Special Event August 24, 2004:
Noh Theatre, Music and Chant - free interactive lecture demonstration on the acting style, music and chant of Noh Theatre. 7:00pm - 9:30pm in the Roundhouse Dance Studio.

Description:
This workshop is three days of intensive, performance-based training in the acting style, dance, chant, music and performance history of Japanese Noh drama. 
Actors, directors, dancers, musicians (particularly vocalists) and academics interested in non-Western performance experience are encouraged to apply.  
One of the oldest continually performed theatre forms in the world, Noh combines dance, chant, music, and mask in a powerful and stately performance experience requiring intense inner concentration and physical discipline. 
Emmert is visiting North America to give his annual three-week summer intensive Noh Training Project workshop in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. On his return to Japan, he will stop in Vancouver for this special workshop. 

The Instructor: 
Richard Emmert is an American who has studied, taught, and performed Noh drama in Japan since 1973. A certified Kita school Noh instructor, he has studied all aspects of Noh performance with a special concentration in movement and music. A professor at Musashino University in Tokyo where he teaches Asian theatre and music, he also directs in Tokyo, a semi-intensive, on-going Noh Training Project for English Speakers. He continues to lead a 3-week Noh intensive in Pennsylvania which is entering it's ninth successful season this summer. Over the years, Mr. Emmert has led extended Noh projects at universities in Australia, England, India, Hong Kong, and the United States, most of which have been with Kita!

Dean is holding a one day Audition Intensive

SATURDAY AUGUST 14TH, 2004

9AM - 6 PM

Jessie award winning Actor and Director, Dean Paul Gibson, will first share his insights into what makes a Shakespearean audition successful. Then 14 students will each present one prepared Shakespearean monologue to be critiqued and then re-performed incorporating Dean's notes.
Auditors welcome.

The fee for this intensive is $150 for non-union participants and $120 for ACTRA/EQUITY/UBCP members. Auditing fee is $75.

4. MUSIC THEATRE AUDITION WORKSHOP - TORONTO

Music Theatre Audition Workshop 
Sunday July 25, 2004
Queen Street East Presbyterian Church
947 Queen Street East (corner of Queen and Carlaw)
10 :00am - 5:00pm
Instructors: Elizabeth Beeler & David W. Smith
Cost - $65.00 / Equity - $52.00

Get the inside scoop on audition techniques from the experts.  Participants will run through a mock audition process and be given specific feedback about how to improve their odds of landing a role.

The Dance Call
Step your way through a dance/movement audition.  Learn how to play up your strengths and compensate for flaws with useful tips for both dancers and non-dancers.  Participants should wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for this section.

Individual Audition
Participants will present a mock audition. They should prepare one musical theatre song, and one short monologue of no more than 2 minutes.  Participants must bring sheet music in the correct key. As in a real audition, they may be cut off, asked for their monologue, or asked to do a cold reading. Tips will be given on selecting material, and acting while singing.

Second Chance
At the conclusion of the mock auditions, participants will have a second chance to present ONE of their pieces, allowing them the opportunity to implement the tips and advice from the instructors.

A pianist will be available for the session.

The instructors...
Elizabeth Beeler:  Miss Beeler is one of Canada's top musical theatre performers and has worked in theatres across the country and in the US. She was an original member of Les Miserables, playing Cosette on the first international tour. She has appeared as soprano soloist in Broadway symphony concerts with Eric Kunzel in Toronto, Cincinnati, Naples, Philadelphia, Detroit, Indianapolis and Chicago. Miss Beeler is also well known for developing new works; Dracula, Larry's Party, and recently Remember Me (Victoria Playhouse), The Magic of Love (Lighthouse Theatre), and The Dance of the Dead ( Can Stage in January 2002).

David W. Smith:  An actor, singer, dancer, and choreographer, David has worked in many of Canada's prestigious theatres.  He holds a BFA in Music Theatre from the University of Windsor, and has been working this summer for DRAYTON ENTERTAINMENT (42nd Street, Man of La Mancha).  David spent four seasons with THE STRATFORD FESTIVAL, where credits include Camelot, The Taming of the Shrew, Man of La Mancha, The Sound of Music, Romeo and Juliet, and My Fair Lady.  He has also worked with Persephone Theatre, Sudbury Theatre Centre, Huron Country Playhouse, and Theatre By The Bay. In January, David returns to The Sudbury Theatre Centre to direct and choreograph Forever Plaid.
