------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------
Sanford Meisner was co-founder of the Group Theatre which took
Stanislavsky's original theories and principles and introduced "Method"
acting to America. Meisner's own philosophy is based on the creation of
truthful behaviour under imaginary circumstances. The work focuses on
helping students get out of their heads and back to trusting their gut
instincts.

John Riven
- Graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse where he studied under Sanford
Meisner and Richard Pinter
- Founding member of the Shadowfax Theatre Company in NYC. Other
founding members include Allison Janney and Steve Rogers.
- Passed on an opportunity to teach at the Neighborhood Playhouse to
open an acting studio in Manhattan.
- Has been teaching full-time in Toronto and New York for over 8 years.

- His passion for the technique is second to none and he is one of
Toronto's most sought after teachers.
- Some current students include: Gemini nominated Tracy Waterhouse (Blue
Murder), Sergio Di Zio (Cinderella Man, Luck), playwright Claudia Dey
(Trout Stanley, The Gwendolyn Poems), Siu Ta (This Is Wonderland,
Harold/Kumar Go To White Castle).

John brings his wisdom and unique teaching style to Vancouver for the
first time. Classes begin November 7th at Shoreline Studios (33 East
7th Avenue) for 4 weeks. Students may choose between Mondays &
Wednesdays or Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6-9pm. Cost is $300 for union

# 1632 Movement for the Advanced Actor with Elena Kanaki
Tues and Thurs 10 am- 1 pm
Sept 27- Oct 13
6 classes
CAEA $240 Non-CAEA $300
EXTENDED Deadline for application: Tues, Sept 20

"This system of movement seems to offer a kind of discipline and
exploration that fills in a missing link in the training of actors. It's
not mime, not dance or Alexander, although like Alexander, it has real,
direct applications to making one a more expressive and alive physical
performer. It is sweaty and rigorous yet incredibly delicate and
specific. I feel my dead zones coming alive." -Liisa Repo-Martell

The goals for this class are to develop a higher state of control and
awareness of the actor's body, apply movement to character study
(creation of a role) and exploring movement as means of triggering
emotion. Elena Kanaki will guide students through Level One of her
system including body awareness, division of the body to 7 movement
different zones: neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, feet, and
development and coordination of muscles that are normally inactive. If
the progress of the class allows, she will continue working at the Level
2 Intermediate level that includes more profound study and practice of
movement, coordination between mobile parts of the body and sequential
movement of different parts of the body.

Instructor: Elena Kanaki

# 1626 On-Camera Audition Lab Intensive with Lynne Cormack
Fri 6-10 pm, Sat 10 am-6 pm & Sun 10 am-5 pm
Sept 30- Oct 2
CAEA $260 Non-CAEA $330
Deadline for application: Sept 22

The audition: the place where, in a totally artificial environment, the
actor must create the role and the opportunity of the job all by
themselves. This intensive is designed to give you practical, solid
audition preparation skills and understanding of how to give the best
audition possible. Working in a "laboratory" environment, you will
explore: how to learn and emotionally access the script when under the
constraints of time and nerves, how your work actually looks on camera,
vs. what you think you did, how to use the camera and the artificial
environment of the audition to your best advantage. Contemporary film
and t.v. scripts will be used. Rehearsal outside of class time will be
necessary. This is an extremely practical class involving a lot of
camera time, feedback about your work, and practice with the material.
Ideal course for those whose careers have focussed mainly on theatre but
would like to expand into film and t.v.
