MEMBER ADVISORY - EQUITY MEMBERS ASKED TO SUPPORT AMENDMENTS TO STATUS OF THE ARTIST LEGISLATION IN ONTARIO
------------------------

Canadian Actors' Equity Association supports ACTRA's efforts calling on the Government of Ontario to make amendments to the proposed Status of Ontario's Artists Act. Equity members are asked to join with ACTRA on Thursday, April 19 at a news conference calling for fundamental amendments to this legislation.

Where: Queen's Park Media Studio, First Floor, Ontario Legislature
When: Thursday, April 19, 2007, 11:00 a.m.

As part of the Ontario Budget Bill 187 (Schedule 39) the Liberal Government introduced legislation that falls far short of delivering on its promise from the 2003 provincial election campaign. The proposed Act does not address improved minimum working conditions, enhanced economic and social benefits and collective bargaining rights for professional artists and other self-employed cultural workers.

In order to deliver real improvements for artists, the Government of Ontario must implement legislative amendments, specifically providing for a collective bargaining procedure for professional artists and engagers. Equity also wants to see the introduction of protections for child performers, enhanced training and professional development programs in the cultural sector, income averaging for artists and greater protections for senior members of our community.
