Artistic Associate

Gateway Theatre is looking for Artistic Associate starting September 1 -
June 30, 2008 Monday - Friday with some weekends and evening work as
required. This is a one-year renewable contract with a view to creating
a long-term relationship. Candidates with at least five years of
professional theatre experience are encouraged to apply. 

Ideally, the candidate is one who is interested in learning to be an
Artistic Director of a regional theatre and who is willing to cut their
teeth working on the ever unfolding artistic journey, vision and mandate
of one of the most progressive and innovative companies in BC.

Reporting to the Artistic Director Simon Johnston, the candidate will be
responsible for producing the SceneFirst play development program and
other special projects. The position will also act as an artistic
liaison for all Gateway programs, assist the Artistic Director in
planning, researching and implementing the Main Stage, Studio, Scene
First, Community Connections and Gateway Academy programs. Additionally,
the position will be required to represent Gateway Theatre and the
Artistic Director at local, provincial and national events from time to
time. 

These responsibilities require knowledge of and an interest in all
aspects of artistic direction including but not limited to: strategic
artistic planning, event planning, marketing, production, auditions,
casting, grant writing, dramaturgy, contracting and budget management. 

Skills required include a thorough knowledge of professional theatre
practice with specific reference to actors, directors, designers and
other artists and theatre practitioners working in the Lower Mainland.
Computer skills are a must; particularly Word, Excel, Outlook. Knowledge
of at least one design program is an asset. Excellent verbal and written
communication skills are required along with superb organizational
abilities as applied to the management within a professional theatre
company. Abilities to multitask and navigate the sometimes-volatile
world of theatre with diplomacy and grace under pressure are important
talents needed to succeed in this position. 

Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.
