WIPO "BEIJING TREATY" ON AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCE CONCLUDED
-----------------------------
A World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) diplomatic conference to finalize a new treaty for audiovisual performers was successfully concluded on June 26, 2012 as negotiators from WIPO member states signed the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances - so named in recognition of the city that hosted the final round of negotiations. This new treaty brings audiovisual performers into the fold of the international copyright framework in a comprehensive way.

The Beijing Treaty offers new protections in the areas of compensation for, and ownership of, recorded and broadcast performances. The treaty protects artists working in film, TV and digital media from exploitation by giving them rights over how their image can be used and re-used. It will enter into force once it has been ratified by 30 eligible parties, including countries or certain intergovernmental organizations.

Equity recognizes its performer colleagues working in the audio-visual sector from around the world for their tireless pursuit of this treaty which provides for conditions that will ensure additional compensation and protection for performers.

Congratulations are extended to ACTRA colleagues including National Executive Director, Stephen Waddell and National President Ferne Downey who delivered an opening address on behalf of performers around the globe. Equity also recognizes years of resolute work by FIA (International Federation of Actors) on issues relating to performers' rights.
