Ethno-cultural mandate or ethno-cultural casting statement:
In 'Once on This Island' lies the turbulent and sickening tension of 'shade-ism'. This prejudice which has spread throughout the African Diaspora since the colonial conquests of the 16th and 17th Century is central to the tension and themes of the piece; and one that we are going to tackle head-on.  The mixing of race with European conquerors with the native black population of the Caribbean islands led to caste systems that affect us to this day. For this reason, we will boldly attempt to cast this production to accentuate this sad prejudice at the heart of this extraordinary folk-lore.
