Queen's Park - Toronto, NDP MPP Paul Miller, Hamilton East - Stoney Creek, along with Equity and ACTRA, are delighted with Bill 71, the Protecting Child Performers Act, 2013, passing second reading at the Ontario Legislature.

"After ten long years of hard work by Equity and ACTRA, we have finally come this far", said Miller, "I look forward to the Standing Committee debates and, hopefully, to moving Bill 71 to Third Reading and Royal Assent this fall."

"It's a long process but we've cleared the second hurdle, said David Sparrow, President of ACTRA Toronto, "We won't let up until this Bill becomes law."

Arden R. Ryshpan, Equity Executive Director echoed "It's been a long haul, but today we're a little bit closer to protecting our most vulnerable."

"It has been a wonderful experience being involved with this project and I want to express my sincere appreciation to Equity and ACTRA performers and staff for their unfailing dedication to the protection of children in the entertainment industry," said Miller. "Getting the Bill through second reading is a major accomplishment, but the job's not done, we still have to move the Bill to the Standing Committee on General Government agenda for public hearings, which we are working to have happen at the Committee's next meeting."

Equity is the voice of professional artists working in live performance in English Canada. It is a national artists' association representing almost 6,000 performers, directors, choreographers, fight directors and stage managers working in theatre, opera and dance from coast to coast.
