The Council and Honours Committee of Canadian Actors' Equity Association held its biennial awards celebrating artistic excellence, philanthropy and community leadership on February 24, 2014.

Life Membership is awarded by Council to members who have made an outstanding contribution to the performing arts. It recognizes not only career achievement, but also colleagues who go “above and beyond” to benefit Equity and its members. Three of Canada’s top talents in performing and directing received Life Membership in 2013.

Philip Akin (Toronto, ON), Janet Irwin (Ottawa, ON) and Kenneth Welsh (Toronto, ON) were recognized for their artistic excellence and achievement and also for their dedication to mentoring emerging talent. "It is Equity’s honour to recognize and celebrate these special individuals who have given so selflessly of their skill and inspiration." stated Council President Teichman.

The 2014 recipient of the Larry McCance Award, awarded for outstanding contribution to the Association was five-term Equity Councillor Don Wright (Vancouver, BC) in recognition of his distinguished service to Equity’s western opera membership.

Dedicated arts supporter and philanthropist Gail Asper, OC, OM (Winnipeg, MB) is this year's recipient of Honorary Membership in Equity. A beloved patron of the art and culture in her home town and throughout Canada, this honour recognizes Gail's generous philanthropy work, most notably as President and Trustee of The Asper Foundation.

Council awards the CAEA Award of Distinction when exceptional organization is deserving of recognition. The 2014 recipient was Stage Managing the Arts (S.M.Arts). Over the past 18 years this instructional service organization has provided quality training to stage mangers - from early career counselling to high-level mid-career professional development. Accepting the award were S.M.Arts Director Janelle Rainville and S.M.Arts Founder Winston Morgan.
