Additional information:

Resonance Theatre will be holding a rehearsed reading of Renée Salewski and Allyson Devenish's new play "Rubi" in February 2015; date TBC. Rehearsals will be help in late January and early February.

Based on Dumas' Camille and Verdi's Traviata, the backdrop has moved to England in the early 60's, centred around a decades-old, close-knit West Indian community. Rubi's "profession" and suitability for a relationship with Alfred is called into question by his father, Alfred Sr. In addition to this, Alfred Sr. is concerned that his bi-racial son is potentially ruining his future rise in society solely by loving a woman who is darker than him.

A tale of true love while questioning the old but prevalent prejudice of colourism - "the dependence of social status on skin colour alone". We are seeking 2 female and 3 male actors of varying shades. Please see breakdown below:

Rubi: named after the family name of her trademark flower. Mid to late 30s. Dark skin. Strong, independent, intelligent, classy. Always well-dressed, always in control.

Olympia: Early 20s. Fairer than Rubi. Friend and protégé of Rubi. A confidante, but eager to take over Rubi's "business".

Alfred: Early 20s. Bi-racial. Half-way through university, but wants time out to live, have fun, with his friend

Wesley: Early 20s. Darker than Alfred (above). Have been friends since childhood. Slightly more risk-taking than his friend. Tends to lead him astray, always in the pursuit of a good time.

Alfred Sr: Late 40s-early 50s. Father of Alfred Jr. Emigrated to London in late 1940s. Began by working as a labourer, now has own decorating company, employing a number of those who emigrated with him or their offspring. Known as a fair employer, highly regarded and respected.

Only those chosen to audition will be contacted. We thank everyone for taking the time to submit.

Equity members will be seen first at all open audition calls. Equity members cast in this production will be engaged under an Equity form of contract. CAEA members: please bring your membership card to the audition.
