1830s. Two minstrels are passing North from London, Ontario. Caught
gambling in the streets, they're being pursued by police. Searching for
safe lodging, they burst into the Wilberforce hotel, owned and operated
by Austin Steward, the black president of a stalwart black colony.
Search for meaning as the colony he established crumbles, Austin tells
the two strangers the story of his life, and they come to learn
something life-changing about the experience of early black settlers in
Middlesex County.

Austin Steward is an actual historical figure who was born into slavery
in Virgina, won his emancipation in his early twenties in New York, and
came north to Middlesex in the 1820s to break land, clear forest, and
establish a colony. Austin became a leader in his community, and was
elected president. He built a hotel, where he raised his young family,
until the town's collapse in the 1830s. A gifted orator, and passionate
statesman, Austin wrote extensively about the American South,
pre-confederation Canada, and expounded voluminously on his ideas of
morality, statehood, black suffrage, exodus, temperance, and much more.

We are casting for the role of Austin, at his prime.

Equity members will be seen first at all open audition calls. Equity
members cast in this production will be engaged under an Equity form of
contract. CAEA members: please bring your membership card to the
