CANADA COUNCIL GRANTING PROGRAM CHANGES

The Canada Council for the Arts recently announced they are reducing 147
granting programs to six new granting streams; this change is announced in a
short video on the council website, which can be found here:
http://newfundingmodel.canadacouncil.ca/.

At this point in the process, many details about the changes are scarce, but
the following things have been announced:
- The current programs will remain in effect for the remainder of 2015 and
2016
- The Council will transition to an exclusively online application system in
2016
- A complete shift to the new funding streams will take place in 2017

Announcing such a sweeping change with few specifics has understandably
provoked concern within arts communities. Some media has called the old
process “cumbersome”. The Council, on the other hand, insists that the
changes are proactive and a response to numerous conversations and
consultations. There have been several pieces in the popular press that
