EQUITY BYLAW UPDATES - JULY 2016
-----------------------------------

Equity's Council encourages all members to be familiar with the rules that
govern membership in our Association. Electronic copies of the current
bylaws are always posted for review or download in the "Document Library"
section of EQUITYONLINE, and are available in print format upon request to
the Association.

------------------------------
Article 1: a new sub-article was inserted to consolidate Equity’s various
jurisdictional definitions into a single statement.

Article 1: the words "non-member" were added to the definition of an Equity
Apprentice to clarify that apprenticeship is not a membership class.

Articles 1(i) and (ii) and 15(d): under the current Reciprocal Agreement
with ACTRA, special mention of ACTRA Apprentices in regards to eligibility
for permit engagement contracts is no longer needed. Article 15(d) was
repealed to remove this, and the supporting definitions of ACTRA and ACTRA
Apprentice were removed from Article 1.

Articles 20(a) and (b): these two articles, dealing with access to an
additional apprenticeship credit to recognize formal stage management
training, were reworded for simplicity and to remove ambiguity.

Article 21(b): this article, dealing with stage management apprenticeship
credits, was reworded for greater clarity.

Article 122.2: a new article was added to limit eligibility for election to
Council. It applies only to members who are in contravention of proper
contracting requirements, or having engaged in another unprofessional
behaviour covered by the bylaws. For this limit to take effect, the member
must have been found in violation through due completion of the disciplinary
process. The exclusion from eligibility for election lasts for the longer of
five years, or until any judgment or penalty from the disciplinary process
has been satisfied.

Housekeeping: multiple changes were made across several articles to
standardize references to engagement permit contracts. Articles 7.1(a) and
(b) dealing with Extended-visa Regular Members were reversed in order to
mirror how other membership categories are addressed. References to
probationary and provisional membership in Articles 16(a) and (b) were
removed as obsolete, and the two articles were combined. Articles 17(c),
20(d) and 21(d) were edited to remove redundant text relating to application
to the Executive Director for various purposes. Changes to Articles 23(a),
23(e), 24 and 29.1 were made to remove references to the joining "program",
which is a descriptor not used elsewhere in the bylaws. No substantive
alterations were made through any of these changes.
