The Enchanted Loom (World Premiere)
A Cahoots Theatre Production in Association with the Factory Theatre
By Suvendrini Lena
Directed by Marjorie Chan
Factory Studio Theatre, October – November 2016

Cahoots is currently seeking performers for the following roles:

KAVITHA: Female, 12 – 15 years of age
Please note any dance or movement experience (preferably bharatanatyam).

Kavitha is a young Tamil girl, whose family is undergoing a trying time.
She is, at times feisty, optimistic and wise. Her father suffers from
epilepsy, which includes delusions of remembering his son, Kavalan, believed
lost in the Sri Lankan civil war. Kavitha desperately wishes for her family
to be happy and whole. She is close to her surviving brother Kanaan and
father, but struggles to connect with her mother.

KANAAN / KAVALAN: Male, 20s

Kanaan is a talented medical student and the surviving twin. He is
passionate and when he learns that his brother may be alive, he becomes
determined to go to his homeland to find him, as he has always felt his
absence. He has a complicated relationship with his father, who resists the
medical procedure that may heal him. Kavalan is the lost twin, given up to
the Tamil Tigers as a young boy. He has survived, and become deeply
involved with the Tigers. He is proud, fierce, fiery and yet is a lost young
man, having grown up away from his family.

SYNOPSIS

The Sri Lankan civil war has left many scars on Thangan and his family, most
noticeably the loss of his eldest son and crippling epileptic seizures
brought on by his torture during the war. As the final days of the war play
out; the family watches from Toronto, where a neurological procedure
provides a chance to heal. This poetic play, part medical, part mystical is
a harrowing tale of loss and hope that reminds us of the joys and pain of
unconditional love for family, and freedom.
