This is an exciting new musical that will receive a full workshop production
in Toronto June 7 - July 17, 2016. Writer: Craig Lucas; Composer: David
Shire; Lyricist: Richard Maltby; Director: Adrian Noble; Choreographer:
Graciela Daniele; Music Supervisors: David Caddick and Kristen Blodgette

MADAME SOUSATZKA: (Female) She is a Polish born and celebrated piano
teacher. Fierce and formidable with great humour, compassion and depth of
soul, she was forced into exile as a young girl and now 35+ years later -- a
survivor. She lives at 132 Vauxhall Mansion with the Countess, Mr. Cordle
and Jenny. Must be an excellent singer.

COUNTESS: (Female) A Polish émigré, she wears the faded aristocracy of her
youth. The Countess quietly supports her tenants’ work by covering
shortfalls in mortgage payments on 132 Vauxhall Mansions. Must be an
excellent singer.

THEMBA KHENKETHA (Male). He is a teenage South-African piano prodigy who is
fierce, intelligent and with a strong point of view. He has chosen exile to
become a concert classical pianist. Actor must a have a strong singing
voice, and acting ability to carry a leading role in a musical. Some
familiarity with Classical piano playing a plus. A knowledge of the language
of the tribes in the South African region is very beneficial as well. Must
be an excellent singer.

NONHLANHLA KHENKETHA: (Female) She is THEMBA’s Mother and an anti-apartheid
activist. She grows in conflict with SOUSATZKA as she struggles to hold on
to her son. Must be an excellent singer.

JABULANI KHENKETHA: (Male) He is THEMBA’s father, a successful jazz musician
and anti-apartheid activist. Jabulani has a sense of majesty yet is still
playful, gifted, and centered. He is serving a life sentence on Robben
Island for his political work. Must be an excellent singer.

MR. CORDLE: (Male) An osteopath by trade, in the latter stages of his
career, he is gentlemanly, closeted and part of the small ad hoc family at
132 Vauxhall Mansions. Must be able to sing.

JENNY: (Female) She is a call girl, and sous chef in training, who lives at
132 Vauxhall Mansions. Jenny is unsentimental about her work-it is just a
means to an end. Seeking a strong singer with comedic qualities.

SARAH: (Female) A red-headed Londoner, she is one of THEMBA’s high school
friends. Sarah is open-hearted and lively; a singer and very talented
dancer.

AMAHLE: (Female) She is the South African sister-in-law to NONHLANHLA,
fellow exile, world-class and widely-celebrated jazz performer. Must have
great comic ability, and a great singing voice in Soprano and Jazz style.

FELIX MANDERS: (Male) He is a Classical music impresario who is clever,
dignified and passionate about music. He is still considered handsome for
his age and is having an affair with JENNY who is much younger. Must be able
to sing.

MRS. MANDERS: (Female) She is FELIX’s wife who is equally passionate about
music and equally passionate about her husband. Must be able to sing.

DANCE ENSEMBLE Dancers who are also strong singers and actors with
individual specific character, energy and passion are required. The various
dance styles include traditional African dance inspired by the spirit and
rhythms of the culture, Dance-Pop, and elegant stylized waltzes.

SINGING ENSEMBLE Strong singers/actors who move well to understudy roles
listed above.
