MARCH 27 IS WORLD THEATRE DAY
---------------------

On March 27 Canada once again joins more than ninety countries around the
world in celebrating the powerful and passionate nature of theatre.

Created in 1962 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),
World Theatre Day is celebrated annually by the international theatre
community.

The ITI has commissioned Russian theatre director and theatre professor
Anatoli Vassiliev to author the 2016 World Theatre Day Message. This
communication is translated into many different languages each year.

Traditionally written by a theatre personality of world stature and
translated into over twenty languages, this message is published in
newspapers and theatre programs, and recited at events and theatre
performances dedicated to World Theatre Day. The message celebrates the
power of theatre as an indispensable bridge-builder for international
understanding and peace, and promotes the protection of cultural diversity
and identity in communities throughout the world.
