TODAY IS WORLD THEATRE DAY
---------------------
On March 27 Canada once again joins more than ninety countries around the
world in celebrating the powerful and passionate nature of theatre.

Created by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in
1962, World Theatre Day is celebrated annually by the international
theatre community including ITI Centres, ITI Cooperating Members, theatre
professionals, theatre organizations, theatre universities and theatre
lovers all over the world. This day is a celebration for those who can see
the value and importance of the theatre art form, and acts as a
wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions that have not
yet recognized its value to society and the individual, and its potential
for economic growth.

The ITI has commissioned Isabelle Huppert, acclaimed French theatre and
cinema actor, to author the 2017 World Theatre Day Message. The English
message and other translations may be read at:
https://www.world-theatre-day.org/messageauthor.html

Written by a theatre personality of world stature and translated into over
twenty languages, this message is published in newspapers and theatre
programs, and recited at events and theatre performances dedicated to
World Theatre Day. The message celebrates the power of theatre as an
indispensable bridge-builder for international understanding and peace,
and promotes the protection of cultural diversity and identity in
communities throughout the world.
