Ethno-cultural mandate or ethno-cultural casting statement: Theatre Passe
Muraille is committed to reflecting diversity and inclusion throughout our
programming. For this project we are seeking applications from South-Asian
and Middle-Eastern male-identified or non-binary artists. Artists with lived
experience relative to the characters are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of
and fluency in Urdu or Hindi language families are considered an asset.

PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION:

For years Zaya has balanced two identities. The first is one he was born
into. The second is something he came to know. As secrets from the past are
revealed, and sickness strikes his family, Zaya is torn between loyalties,
cultures, and time.

ROLES:

MUBEEN – South Asian - Cis-Male, late 20s- early 30s – English/Urdu speaker–
Zaya’s childhood friend and son of the Mualana at the Masjid where the two
met. With Zaya, Mubeen shares a traumatic past that is unspoken. Immigrated
to Canada from Pakistan quite young. Relatively devout. In the present
moment he is about to be married.

SALIM – South Asian or Middle Eastern – Gender non-conforming – late 30s –
English speaker with some Urdu – Zaya’s partner. Salim is has a relatively
calm energy. Came to Canada from UAE. Professionally they are a supply
teacher. Devout. In the present moment they are planning to perform Hajj
with their mother.
