In the Prairies, trees face many challenges. Arborists will be travelling to Lethbridge to gain a better understanding of how trees grow and how they react and protect themselves against stresses such as drought, insects and disease attacks. A series of <b>lectures on integrated pest management</b> will include presentations on soil and foliar analysis, plant pathology, regional invasive pests, provincial regulations and safe pesticide use will be held on March 24 and 25<sup>th</sup> in Lethbridge.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Tree care is a potentially hazardous occupation with a potential for personal injury or property damage when performed by untrained individuals. Several participants will be attending the <b>Registered Chainsaw Proficiency Certification</b> course. Participants will be instructed on equipment maintenance, safe work practices, practical applications and must demonstrate their ability to safely fell trees in a variety of work and hazard conditions.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is a world-wide association for tree care professionals who promote proper care of urban forest resources. An ISA Certified Arborist has passed an exam which indicates they understand all aspects of tree health care as well as job safety. They are required to continue their education and remain current on industry standards to maintain their certification. The TRACE Course was developed by the Pacific North-West Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture and is currently offered in countries around the world. Program co-founder and respected Certified Arborist, Julian Dunster will be facilitating the course and administering the exams.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>To register, individuals must be a Certified Arborist with comprehensive tree identification, tree biology and physiology knowledge. “Tree risk assessment is a technical process requiring considerable judgement, experience, and skill”. Persons who have successfully completed this level of training will be qualified to assess the level of risk a tree, or part of a tree, presents to public, property and tree care workers. Risk assessments of trees is undertaken in order to determine which trees are actively failing, will soon fail, might fail soon, have years of life left or are very healthy.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Trees are assessed use scientifically based criteria which include biological aspects, mechanical aspects and tree condition. Trees are then assigned a ranking of between 0 and 12. This ranking aids insurance companies, adjustors, corporate Risk Managers, and homeowners when making decisions on the level of risk and how to reduce or remove the potential liability a tree presents.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>It cannot be emphasized enough that tree risk assessment requires years of formal training and experience and should only be done by persons who can demonstrate they are qualified to do so. Anyone can say a tree is a hazard – it is another to be able to prove it.
