<P class=MsoNormal>About a year ago I began noticing a peculiar affliction affecting two mature littleleaf linden (<I>Tilia cordata</I>) trees in an older neighbourhood in Toronto. Symptoms appeared as the leaves first wilting, then falling off. Both trees also sprouted very heavily near the base and in the lower canopy, as if responding to some shock. This year they are completely dead. The disease (or whatever it is) appeared to progress very quickly.<o:p></o:p></P>

<P class=MsoNormal>Being that the trees are located at a frat house, I figured they might have been poisoned as a prank, but the grass is very green below (no herbicide injury, then…) and I noticed another linden in the same area with the same symptoms, now also dead. <I>Verticillium </I>wilt might also be a culprit? <o:p></o:p></P>

<P class=MsoNormal>Anyhow, today, while touring through a much younger community (1970s), I noticed many of the lindens in the area showing similar symptoms – some had stunted and wilting foliage, while others were totally dead.<o:p></o:p></P>

<P class=MsoNormal>It’s a bit puzzling. Anyone have any insight on what might be causing this in what is supposed to be a fairly hardy urban tree? Anyone else noticing this on their lindens? <o:p></o:p></P>
