Furthermore, the Ontario supplement provides a species rating worksheet that you can use to develop your own rating (pg. 18). That said, if you wanted to use the alternative species approach for sumac instead, I would look for something with similar characteristics (i.e., native, pioneer, aggressive growth, etc.). I almost hate to suggest it, but something like black locust may not be a bad surrogate. Other alternatives might be something like hawthorn or serviceberry, perhaps.
