Much of this inventory was closer to populated areas and on the dryer , eastern side of Vancouver Island and had harmful effects on community watersheds. Clearcut logging is harder to recover from in dryer areas and with climate change intensified in those last 20 years , the rippling effects on ground water are compounded. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-bookmark:_MailEndCompose'><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'>The mills that were tooled for bigger timber shut down and the re-tooling and re-investment for local manufacturing and value-added mills did not keep pace triggering the justification for raw log exports. So the AAC remained much the same but the value chain was lost resulting in less jobs per cubic metre harvested. The forests and environment have been degraded with less benefit or control for local communities. Same volume of wood harvested with less revenue . Worse for the environment and the local economies.
