on November 7 and 8th, 2017, with over 125 participants. The audience included students from three Atlantic Universities and the Maritime Forest Ranger School, urban planners, several watershed groups, NGOs, Municipal and provincial governments, utility companies
from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, forest pest professionals, the Canadian Forest Service, professors, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Invasive Species Council, foresters, arborists and more. Various trade show booths were set up in the registration area
for all to enjoy when time allowed.</div>
<br>
<div>The two-day conference with over 22 speakers began with a warm welcome from the Mayor of Fredericton, Mr. Mike O'Brien, who has a true connection and vision of the Urban Forest in his community; a leader that understands the demands put on forests by pests
(e.g. emerald ash borer, spruce budworm), urban sprawl, increases in urban development and extreme weather conditions (e.g. ice storms). </div>

<div>Our keynote speaker included Dr. Kathleen Wolf, a Research Social Scientist from the University of Washington, who discussed health benefits and how the urban forest contributes to our wellbeing. She was followed by Verna Crossman, Science Policy Advisor
from Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Forest Service (CFS) who spoke about ecological goods and service values and showcased new research and programs underway that relate to urban forests in Canada. Our third speaker was Richard Zurawski, a recognized meteorologist,
author, producer, writer, and talk show host on radio and television, who spoke about getting the message out to the public on trees and their value. If it has to do with science reporting there is a definite disconnect with the media. The challenge then becomes
how do we engage the media to understand the science and assist us in advancing our important messages? Our morning plenary line-up concluded with Dr. Adrina C. Bardekjian, Manager of Urban Forestry Programs & Research Development with Tree Canada, and Postdoctoral
Research Fellow with the University of British Columbia, who shared results and developments of various initiatives being undertaken across Canada as well as insights on current urban forestry research trends in Canada. </div>

<div>During lunch David Coon, first elected green MLA for Fredericton South and leader of the Green Party for NB (third green parliamentarian elected in Canada), spoke and shared stories of how forests have shaped his life.</div>
<div>The afternoon talks took place in concurrent sessions covering various topics which included: 1) Landscaping in a changing climate, what can we change in our current practice; 2) Urban planning strategies that include our UF sustaining new developments
ensuring they are healthy places to live; 3) Human health and happiness benefits from the urban forest; and 4) Utilities and the role they play in management of the urban forest.</div>

<div>The municipality of Fredericton hosted a public evening session at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre Lecture Theatre with over 65 in attendance focusing on Emerald Ash Borer research, economic impacts, treatment and control. This is in response to
realizing that this pest is close to New Brunswick - only a 10-hour drive away from Quebec.</div>

<div>Day two began with concurrent sessions covering the management of pests and diseases in our urban forests, early detection, regulations, vulnerability of certain tree species to invasive forest pests. Native forest and corridors where management is critical,
various watershed groups told their story of mitigation and improvement, success stories on riparian zone restoration.</div>

<div>A panel discussion took place after lunch lead by Heather Fraser, Chair of the Atlantic Urban Forest Collective and the Atlantic Representative of the Canadian Urban Forest Network, involving 5 key people from the audience, an urban forestry professional,
Meteorologist, a Professor, Arborist and EAB Pest Specialist from Quebec. Questions to the panel included: What are the vectors for change most likely to impact our Atlantic urban forests? What can we do to prepare? How is the advice different for large versus
small communities?</div>

<div>Heather engaged the panel beyond the question/answer period and opened the floor to all in attendance - asking them what they learned, did our conference achieve what we wanted it to (increased networking, sharing of knowledge and expertise, improving
awareness of urban forestry issues in the Atlantic region, opening doors for new partnerships and projects), do you want to see more Atlantic UF conferences in the future?</div>

<div>Each sector of the audience (i.e. students, NGOs, arborists, researchers, practitioners) was asked to speak and comment on the conference discussion. This was received quite well. Feedback sheets were extended to all and comments concluded that future
conferences are wanted but concurrent sessions with so many good speakers made it hard to choose - you wanted to listen to everyone!</div>

<div>The two-day conference ended with a walking tour taking place from the hotel along the riverfront trail across the Bill Thorpe walking bridge looking at trees and infrastructure challenges and successes. </div>

à Fredericton, Nouveau-Brunswick, les 7 et 8 novembre 2017. Plus de 125 personnes y ont participé. L'auditoire comprenait des étudiants de trois universités de l'Atlantique et de l'École de gardes-forestiers des Maritimes, des planificateurs urbains, plusieurs
groupes liés aux bassins hydrographiques, des organismes non gouvernementaux, des représentants des gouvernements municipaux et provinciaux, des entreprises de services publics du Nouveau-Brunswick et de la Nouvelle-Écosse, des professionnels spécialisés dans
la lutte contre les ravageurs forestiers, des représentants du Service canadien des forêts, de l'Agence canadienne d'inspection des aliments et du Conseil sur les espèces envahissantes, des professeurs, des forestiers, des arboristes et bien d'autres personnes.
Plusieurs kiosques du salon professionnel placé dans l'aire d'inscription ont été visités quand le temps le permettait.</div>

<div>L'événement de deux jours avec plus de 22 conférenciers a commencé avec un mot de bienvenue chaleureux du maire de Fredericton - M. Mike O'Brien - qui possède une connexion et une vision solide de la forêt urbaine dans sa collectivité. C'est un leader
qui comprend bien les demandes que posent sur les forêts les ravageurs (comme l'agrile du frêne et la tordeuse des bourgeons de l'épinette), l'étalement urbain, le développement urbain accru et les événements météorologiques extrêmes (comme les tempêtes de
verglas).</div>

<div>Notre conférencière principale était Mme Kathleen Wolf (Ph. D.), une chercheure en sciences sociales de l'Université de Washington qui a expliqué comment la forêt urbaine contribue à notre santé et notre bien-être. Elle a été suivie par Mme Verna Crossman,
conseillère en politique scientifique de Ressources naturelles Canada - Service canadien des forêts - qui a parlé de la valeur des biens et services écologiques et a présenté de nouvelles recherches et nouveaux programmes en cours sur les forêts urbaines au
Canada. Le troisième conférencier était M. Richard Zurawski, un météorologue, auteur, réalisateur, écrivain et animateur d'émission bien connu à la radio et à la télévision, qui a discuté du besoin de faire connaître au grand public la valeur des arbres. Il
y a un manque de connexion avec les médias lorsqu'il s'agit de reportage sur les sciences. Il faut trouver comment faire comprendre des notions scientifiques aux médias pour qu'ils puissent ensuite passer notre message important au public. Notre séance plénière
du matin s'est terminée avec Mme Adrina C. Bardekjian (Ph. D.), gestionnaire des programmes forestiers urbains et du développement de la recherche pour Arbres Canada et une boursière de recherche postdoctorale de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Elle
a partagé avec l'auditoire les résultats et les détails de plusieurs initiatives réalisées un peu partout au Canada ainsi que ses idées sur les tendances actuelles en matière de recherche sur la foresterie urbaine au Canada.</div>

<div>Pendant le repas du midi, M. David Coon, premier député vert de Fredericton-Sud et chef du Parti Vert pour le N.-B. (troisième parlementaire vert élu au Canada), a partagé avec tous des histoires sur l'importance des forêts dans sa vie.</div>

<div>Les présentations de l'après-midi ont eu lieu parallèlement et couvraient divers sujets dont : 1) l'aménagement paysager dans un climat changeant - que peut-on faire dans notre pratique actuelle; 2) des stratégies de planification urbaine comprenant des
aménagements qui favorisent la foresterie urbaine et produisent des lieux de vie sains; 3) les forêts urbaines favorisent la santé et le bien-être des gens; et 4) le rôle des services publics dans la gestion des forêts urbaines.</div>

<div>La municipalité de Fredericton a organisé une séance publique en soirée à l'amphithéâtre du Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre à laquelle ont participé plus de 65 personnes pour discuter des recherches sur l'agrile du frêne ainsi que les répercussions
économiques, le traitement et le contrôle de ce ravageur. L'agrile du frêne s'est beaucoup rapproché du Nouveau-Brunswick - seulement dix heures de route du Québec. </div>

<div>Le deuxième jour de la conférence a commencé avec des séances parallèles sur la gestion des ravageurs et des maladies dans nos forêts urbaines, le dépistage précoce, la réglementation et la vulnérabilité de certaines essences d'arbres aux ravageurs forestiers
envahissants, les forêts indigènes et les corridors où les activités de gestion sont extrêmement importantes. Divers groupes liés aux bassins hydrographiques ont partagé leurs expériences en matière d'atténuation et d'amélioration ainsi que leur succès relativement
à la restauration de zones riveraines.</div>

<div>Une discussion de groupe s'est déroulée après le repas du midi sous la direction de Mme Heather Fraser, présidente de l'Atlantic Urban Forest Collective et représentante de la région de l'Atlantique du Réseau canadien de la forêt urbaine. Cinq participants
clés de l'auditoire - un professionnel de la foresterie urbaine, un météorologue, un professeur, un arboriste et un spécialiste de l'agrile du frêne venant du Québec - ont guidé cette discussion. Les questions posées aux experts comprenaient : Quels sont les
vecteurs de changement qui affecteront probablement les forêts urbaines de l'Atlantique? Comment pouvons-nous nous préparer? Comment ces conseils diffèrent-ils selon la taille des collectivités?</div>

<div>Après la période de questions et réponses avec les experts, Heather a invité tous les participants à la conférence à partager ce qu'ils avaient appris au cours des deux derniers jours, s'ils avaient atteint leur but en assistant à la conférence (réseautage
accru, partage de renseignements et d'expertise, sensibilisation accrue aux problèmes de la foresterie urbaine dans la région de l'Atlantique, possibilités de nouveaux partenariats et projets) et s'ils désiraient que d'autres conférences sur les forêts urbaines
de l'Atlantique soient organisées dans l'avenir.</div>

<div>On a demandé à des représentants de chaque secteur de l'auditoire (étudiants, organismes non gouvernementaux, arboristes, chercheurs, professionnels) de parler et de faire des commentaires sur les discussions de la conférence. Les commentaires étaient
assez positifs. Des feuilles de commentaires ont été remplies et les participants ont indiqué que d'autres conférences devraient être organisées mais que l'excellence des conférenciers dans les séances parallèles a rendu les choix difficiles parce que tout
le monde voulait entendre tous les conférenciers!</div>

<div>La conférence de deux jours s'est terminée avec une randonnée pédestre sur le sentier longeant la rivière et traversant le pont Bill Thorpe dans le cadre de laquelle les participants ont observé les défis posés aux arbres et aux infrastructures ainsi que
les succès obtenus.</div>
