<div>In Carleton Place population 11,000 near Ottawa we have had a tree planting program for residents since 1998. Every year we think it will be the last but with 3000 units going into the municipality we better expand the program.</div>
<div>With allot of the better planting sites being on private property the program was developed to enhance the Forest Canopy in the town.</div>
<div>This is how it works:</div>
<div>1. The residents pay $20 for a large barefoot tree. We find if they pay something into it they take care of it.</div>
<div>2. 6 native species are available each year some larger species such as sugar maple and some smaller such as service berry.</div>
<div>3. They must go through a workshop which covers</div>
<div> - what is required before picking up the tree - dig the hole</div>
<div> - how to pick up the tree and keep the roots moist</div>
<div> - how to plant the tree properly </div>
<div> - most important how maintain the tree</div>
<div>4. We maintain a list each year where the tree is planted</div>
<div>5. Once you have been through the workshop you do not need to come again if you order a tree. We do get allot of repeats coming back for more advise.</div>
<div>6. We have done informal drive arounds to look at trees that have been planted over the years and have seen very little mortality. I would say we are running at 90%</div>
