The deciduous will break down faster and add nutrients to the soils, The coniferous chips will last a little longer, but may rob the soils of needed nutrients. A good mix for trees is 60% deciduous and 40% coniferous. A good layer, 10 to 15cm thick will do. Keep the woodchips away from the trunk, 3 to 5cm. As big a bed as you can get. 1.2 to 1.7 meters radius around the new trees. Wood shavings can compact too tightly around the tree cutting off air and water.
