[getsmart-l] Off-the-Grid: If he can do it, when will this design become the standard?

This is a very pertinent Star article considering York Region's publication of its report Towards a Sustainable Region. If this model were pursued and supported, sustainability would be all but assured - given that the whole Region stops its insane urge to sprawl!!! Appropriate modifications might be Community-based off-the-grid efforts instead of only individual efforts; one example is community energy generation. Many of us have advocated for small-scale sewage/water treatment facilities that were decried by the Region - poor old King City - but in this context the idea takes merit.

Twelve years ago, Rolf Paloheimo took his family off the grid, disconnected them from city water and moved them into Toronto's first Healthy House – a downtown home that looks more like a mad scientist's dream house than a typical urban dwelling.

The cistern, which regularly holds a six-month supply of water, nearly went dry one summer, leading Paloheimo to pay his neighbour with a bottle of wine in exchange for an hour's worth of hose water.

Toronto Public Health, Ontario's environment ministry and CMHC have monitored water quality in the house since it was built.
