The latest SPIN on agriculture aims to cultivate your backyard

If you have a backyard, would you let someone else "farm" it in
return for a share of the produce?

The idea is part of what's called SPIN - "small plot intensive"
farming - and it's the newest version of urban agriculture to arrive
in the GTA.

It's not simply planting a conventional garden. As "intensive"
suggests, SPIN farming is intended to yield vegetable and fruit crops
four or five times bigger than conventional techniques would.
Cultivation is organic; most work is done by hand. Three or four
different crops are harvested in a season, in a sequence tailored to
meet market demands and conserve soil nutrients.

In its most urban form, SPIN growers contract with residential
property owners to cultivate all or part of their yard.

Ontario to enact toughest pesticide ban in Canada

Ontario will enact the toughest rules in Canada when its pesticide
ban takes effect today, a move that could land the province in the
legal crosshairs of an international trade dispute.

Ontario is joining Quebec in restricting the use of pesticides, but
its rules go further by prohibiting the sale and cosmetic use of more
than 80 ingredients and 250 products, with few exceptions, experts say.

'Superweed' explosion threatens Monsanto heartlands

"Superweeds" are plaguing high-tech Monsanto crops in southern US
states,
driving farmers to use more herbicides, return to conventional crops
or even
abandon their farms.

Environment Canada forced to reveal full extent of pollution from mines

Court ruling considered major victory for green organizations

Mining companies have long had a loophole in federal environmental
right-to-know law that no other industry enjoys. Environment Canada
has exempted them from having to track the full extent of the
pollution their operations cause.

But a Federal Court ruling issued on Thursday will force Environment
Canada to collect from the industry and divulge to the public the
amount of toxic compounds in tailings and waste rocks found around
every mine in the country.

Studies find factories release pharmaceuticals

Federal scientists testing for pharmaceuticals in water have been
finding significantly more medicine residues in sewage downstream
from public treatment facilities that handle waste from drugmakers.

In one study, samples taken at two treatment plants down the sewer
line from drugmaking factories contained a range of pharmaceuticals -
among them opiates, a barbiturate and a tranquilizer at "much higher
detection frequencies and concentrations" than samples taken at other
plants, according to preliminary research by the U.S. Geological Survey.

One drug, the muscle relaxant metaxalone, was measured in treated
sewage at concentrations hundreds of times higher than the level at
which federal regulators can order a review of a drug's environmental
impact.

Tons of Released Drugs Taint US Water

U.S. manufacturers, including major drugmakers, have legally
released at least 271 million pounds of pharmaceuticals into
waterways that often provide drinking water - contamination the
federal government has consistently overlooked, according to an
Associated Press investigation.

Hundreds of active pharmaceutical ingredients are used in a
variety of manufacturing, including drugmaking: For example, lithium
is used to make ceramics and treat bipolar disorder; nitroglycerin is
a heart drug and also used in explosives; copper shows up in
everything from pipes to contraceptives.

How Big Pharma Distorts Science to Get FDA Approval for Dangerous Drugs

How does Big Pharma keep getting dangerous drugs approved? Through
the best articles and spokesmen money can buy.

In February the Justice Department charged Forest Laboratories with
illegally marketing antidepressants Celexa and Lexapro to younger
patients and burying a study that showed suicidal side effects in
children. But the very next month the FDA approved Lexapro for
depression in adolescents 12 to 17.

In March the Justice Department charged AstraZeneca with knowing and
hiding the diabetes side effects of Seroquel. But this month the FDA
considers expanding the antipsychotic's approvals to depression and
anxiety.

And in January, Eli Lilly pled guilty to promoting its antipsychotic
Zyprexa for unapproved and dangerous uses in a $1.4 billion
settlement. But in March the FDA approved Lilly's Zyprexa/Prozac
combo, Symbyax, for treatment resistant depression (TRD). What do you
get when you cross Zyprexa with Prozac? Someone who gains 100 pounds
and feels great about it!

Search on for nuclear dump host

Infrastructure project worth between $16-25 billion.

The search is on for a community willing to be a host site for
Canada’s nuclear waste.

In May, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization will be releasing a
proposal for how Canada’s waste should be managed.

As of 2008, this country has two million used-fuel bundles in
storage, which have built up over the last 40 years. The NWMO is
looking for a community willing to store them.

Currently, the waste is being kept in either wet or dry storage at
whichever nuclear station it was produced.

Clean Train Coalition

Metrolinx is planning to run more than 350 diesel trains every day on
the Union Station to Georgetown rail corridor without fully
considering the people who will be affected the most. These diesel
trains will be spewing fumes and dividing our neighbourhoods.

Clean Transit is Possible
Our city deserves a clean, effective and modern transportation
system. Now is the time to build a transit solution that will benefit
all of us and serve our region for decades to come. The solution should:

Use clean-running, quiet and light weight electric trains
Eliminate the harmful effects of diesel pollution

  Maintain and enhance neighbourhood connections
Prevent the division and isolation of communities along the corridor

Create accessible and affordable transit for everyone
Ensure this public infrastructure project provides a lasting benefit
to us all

What can YOU do?
Are you concerned about the harmful environmental, social and
economic effects of the proposed plan? We need your help to ensure
that this transportation project is a clean and healthy solution for
the GTA. Find out more here:

Oil, Coal, Auto Industry Lobby Lied About Global Warming For Years

Newly obtained documents reveal that a group that lobbied on behalf
of the oil, coal and auto industry intentionally misled the public
about the causes of global warming during the mid-nineties, The New
York Times reports.

The Global Climate Coalition spent millions of dollars in the
nineties running ads to convince the public that global warming was
not caused by humans and that joining the Kyoto Protocol was a
mistake. However, its own internal documents said, “The scientific
basis for the Greenhouse Effect and the potential impact of human
emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 on climate is well
established and cannot be denied.”
