Save Toronto's Waterfront – Say no to Jets
We all cherish the Toronto waterfront as a place to live, work and play. But our waterfront as we know it could soon be scarred by an expanded Toronto Island airport with jet aircraft. An expansion that will bring noise, pollution and more gridlock – paid by our tax dollars. After heavy lobbying by Porter, City Council is about to give the green light to negotiations to put jets on our waterfront on Tues. April 1st. By speaking out today you can do your part to save Toronto’s waterfront. Fill out the form and your city councillor will receive an email urging him/her to stop the Pearson-by-the-Lake.

Americas Dementia Epidemic
"Tens of millions of unsuspecting Americans, who are mired deeply in the mental “health” system, have actually been made crazy, homicidal, suicidal and neurologically disabled by the use of or the withdrawal from commonly-prescribed, brain-disabling, brain-damaging neurotoxic psychiatric drugs that have been cavalierly handed out like candy, with false assurance from a co-opted FDA. These synthetic prescription drugs are often prescribed in untested and unapproved combinations by unaware but well-intentioned prescribing physicians who have been under the mesmerizing influence of slick propaganda campaigns bankrolled by obscenely profitable multinational pharmaceutical corporations."

Does free speech still exist in the age of the almighty mega-corporation? What are the limits to freedom of speech? Can we put a price on our spoken and written words? Following the 2008 release of the book Noir Canada, author Alain Deneault, his co-writers and his publisher, Éditions Écosociété, grappled with these questions – at great personal expense – after being sued for defamation in Quebec and Ontario courts by two large Canadian mining companies. Deneault and his publisher fought back, becoming entangled in a seemingly never-ending spiral of judicial proceedings. Silence Is Gold is a thriller of a documentary that tells their story, set against the backdrop of the Canadian justice system. We follow the complex procedural twists and turns, eagerly anticipating a resolution that is repeatedly delayed.

Community Consultation: Close the Tenant Protection Loophole

Tues. April 1, 7 pm
Harbourfront Community Centre, Assembly Room C, 627 Queens Quay West
Many tenants in Toronto have been shocked to receive double-digit rent increases after their first year of renting. These increases are far higher than what is allowed under rent increase guidelines, but they are perfectly legal. Why? Because if your rental was built after 1991, you have no rent protection at all. Join the discussion with MPP Rosario Marchese.

Are We Beautiful?

Thur. April 3, 5:30 – 7 pm
Edward Day Gallery, 952 Queen W.
With The SCAR Project Exhibit
Girls and women are bombarded with images of what our society considers acceptable or ideal female bodies. These representations — usually unattainable and always in flux — in the arts and media affect our sense of self, body and sexuality. Images such as The SCAR Project challenge societal definitions of beauty, but what’s the impact of these images? Can these very real bodies change the public discourse around beauty?
Moderator: Katrina Onstad, Novelist, Culture writer and TV Producer
Panelists: Cameron Williamson, Editor-in-Chief, FLARE Magazine | Sarah Liss, Senior Editor, The Grid | Jennifer McWhirter, PhD Candidate, University of Waterloo

Environment & Politics: Bridging the Gap

Thur. April 3, 7:30 - 10 pm
Digital Media Zone at Ryerson, 10 Dundas St. E. #632- [When entering the AMC at Dundas and Yonge, take the elevator just in front of the Starbucks to the 6th Floor]
Pay what you can, 2$ minimum
This is an event surrounding political awareness, with a theme of environmentalism within it. Our key speakers will be Jeanne Maurer, our very own Ryerson Professor, Franz Hartmann, the Executive Director of Toronto Environmental Alliance, and David Crombie, the former Mayor of Toronto. It is our hope to inspire and inform environmentally aware and curious individuals on the importance of political awareness and action. Too many individuals, especially students, do not make the connection between political happenings and the field in which they study and are interested in. We will be hosting a range of environmentalists and look forward to being able to connect them with other like-minded individuals, companies and organizations around Toronto. A silent auction from businesses all over Toronto will be held and complimentary snacks and light refreshments will be available.
