The World

☢ Nuclear sunset overtakes fading dreams As atomic energy gets ever more difficult to afford and renewables become steadily cheaper, a nuclear sunset awaits plans for new plants. The cost of new nuclear is now roughly three times that of both wind and solar, and even existing nuclear stations are struggling to compete.

☢ The 60-Year Downfall of Nuclear Power in the U.S. Has Left a Huge Mess The demand for atomic energy is in decline. But before the country can abandon its plants, there's six decades of waste to deal with.☢ Hitachi scraps £16bn nuclear power station in Wales Hitachi has scrapped plans to build a nuclear power station in Wales, becoming the second firm in two months to abandon a major nuclear project and triggering “a full-blown crisis” for the UK energy’s strategy. “The challenge of financing new nuclear is one of falling costs and greater abundance of alternative technologies, so that it is being out competed.” As a result, the UK signals shift from nuclear to renewables.

☢ France to replace aging nuclear station with 300 MW of solar It just makes good economic and environmental sense. Listen up Ontario!

☢ “Nuclear: Dangerous, A Failed Technology” – Former Nuke Regulatory Chief Greg Jaczko Goes Rogue Podcast interview with former Chair of US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Greg Jaczko, author of Confessions of a Rogue Nuclear Regulator (starts at 7:33). Here’s another shorter audio interview (starts at 3:20). And short video interview here.

☢ Nuclear Submarines & Small Modular Nuclear Reactors for Isolated Communities Commentary by Dr. Gordon Edwards, Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility on the dangers and risks of nuclear power submarines as well as SMNRs (Smal Modular Nuclear Reactors) to be subsidized by Canada’s federal gov’t and dispersed across Canada’s north. More here.

☢ Yucca Mountain: Serpent Swimming Westward 5 min. video by Native Community Action Council of the Shoshone Nation on atomic explosions and nuke waste on their lands.

☢ Some Fukushima Residents Return Despite Radiation Eight years after the nuclear meltdown, wary citizens are moving back to contaminated homesteads—some not by choice.Ontario

☢ Electricity price alert On January 1st Ontario Power Generation (OPG) raised its price of nuclear power by 7% to 8.8 cents per kWh. As a result, the price of nuclear power has doubled since 2002. To add insult to injury, OPG has told the Ontario Energy Board that it needs to increase its price of nuclear power by a further 88% between now and 2025 to pay for the re-building of its Darlington Nuclear Station. Meanwhile, Quebec has a large and rising supply of low-cost water power available to export to Ontario at a fraction of the cost of our nuclear. Premier Ford - let's make a deal with Quebec!Renewables and Conservation

☢ 600+ US environmental orgs say this is what they want in a Green New Deal They’re calling for a complete shift to 100% renewable power generation by 2035 while halting nuclear energy

☢ Canada Finally Joins International Renewable Energy Agency Development of new fossil fuel and nuclear infrastructure like pipelines and rebuilt reactors will leave countries and operators with stranded assets as renewable energy sources overtake them.

☢ 'No such animal as clean coal': Mayor of Texas city powered by solar and wind pokes the bear Texas Mayor goes 100% renewable. In Georgetown, we make our decisions based on the facts.'

☢ Wind power making gains as competitive source of electricity AB just bought wind at 3.9 cents (compared to ON buying rebuilt nuclear at 16.5 cents). AB has committed to raise renewables to 30% by 2030, while SK is committed to 50% by 2030. Meanwhile ON’s Doug Ford just cancelled 758 renewable energy projects. Sigh...

☢ Vancouver commits to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 while Washington DC commits to 100% renewables by 2032 and Melbourne is already powered by 100% renewable energy.Take Action!

☢ Petition to Audit the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Project in Brazil The new Brazilian administration promises to to restart construction of an obsolete nuclear station started in the 70’s but never completed. Brazilian civil society organizations are calling for an audit of the project.

☢ Please contact Premier Ford and ask him to buy low-cost Quebec water power and cancel the high-cost Darlington Re-Build Project. Premier Ford’s cell phone # is 416-805-2156. His email is Doug.Ford at pc.ola.org. Click here to send him a message now.

☢ It’s Time to Make Electricity Savings Real This pamphlet explains how the Ford Gov't can follow through on its promise to lower electricity bills by making a deal to import low-cost power from Quebec. Order free copies from us to distribute to your Ontario friends and neighbours. Eligible for volunteer hours for school or community service. Email: angela at cleanairalliance.org

☢ Petition to Premier Ford Premier Ford must develop a strategy to ensure that Ontario rapidly becomes a world leader in the production and use of EVs (electric vehicles) and other low-carbon technologies.

☢ Canadian Government must protect our rivers from radioactive waste Please sign the petition to protect the Ottawa and Winnipeg Rivers currently threatened by three Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL’s) nuclear waste dump proposals.

☢ Calling Citizen Scientists for Radiation Collection Project We’re looking for citizen radiation monitors interested in contributing to citizen science, and for funders whose support can help make the technology possible for those who can't afford it. For more info see here. If interested (either as a participant or as a funder), please contact mcneill.janet at gmail.com

☢ Sign our petitions to Close Pickering and to Buy Quebec Power. And share them with your friends. Watch our 2 min. video here.
