☢ ACTION ALERT: Please send Premier Ford a TEXT to his cell: 416-805-2156 DRAFT text:

Premier Ford,
Please lower our electricity costs by closing the Pickering nuclear station, cancelling the Darlington nuclear rebuild, and buying low-cost Quebec water power. Thank you.

The World

☢ Storage of nuclear waste a 'global crisis' as stockpile reaches 250,000 tons “More than 65 years after the start of the civil use of nuclear power, not a single country can claim that it has the solution to manage the most dangerous radioactive wastes.”

☢ Technical failures increase risk of contaminated Fukushima water discharge into Pacific The nuclear water crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi plant has been compounded by multiple technical failures and flawed decision making driven by short term cost cutting by the Japanese government and TEPCO, a new Greenpeace Germany analysis concludes. More here.

☢ Cost to US taxpayers to clean up nuclear waste jumps to $493 billion according to the DOE, and will take 50 years. One site alone – Hanford – has already cost US taxpayers $170 billion over the past 30 years though the most challenging parts of the clean-up are still to come.

☢ Former NRC head disagrees with Bill Gates, says nuclear not a safe bet for combating climate change After witnessing several close calls with nuclear plants and the aftermath of Fukushima, the former head of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission comes to the conclusion that there is no such thing as safe nuclear power.

☢ It’s so cold, even a nuclear reactor in N.J. can’t do its job Nukes don't work in extreme weather.

☢ The era of nuclear decommissioning will be characterised by escalating battles (and escalating sticker shock) over reactor lifespan extensions, decommissioning and nuclear waste management.

☢ Small Modular Nuclear Reactors –The Pied Piper Strikes Again Without any adequate consultation with Canadians or First Nations, the Gov't of Canada is unilaterally moving ahead with the development and deployment of a whole new generation of nuclear reactors all over Canada, especially in the north. These “small modular nuclear reactors” (SMNRs or SMRs) will ALL generate post-fission radioactive wastes of all varieties.Ontario

☢ Hydro One to pay American energy company $103M US ($137M Cdn) after failed merger plan Regulator suggested Doug Ford's efforts to force Hydro One CEO to retire was a sign that politics trumped shareholders.

☢ Pickering Nuclear’s huge radioactive waste problem The Pickering Nuclear Station has a deadly secret: The plant is a storehouse for 16 million kilograms of high-level radioactive waste sitting on the edge of Lake Ontario, smack dab in the middle of the Greater Toronto Area.Renewables and Conservation

☼ Germany to close all 84 of its coal-fired power plants, will rely primarily on renewable energy The decision to quit coal follows an earlier bold energy policy move by the German gov't which decided to shut down all of its nuclear power plants by 2022 in the wake of Japan’s Fukushima disaster in 2011.

☼ What if Canada had spent $200bn on wind energy instead of oil?

☢ Petition to Audit the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Project in Brazil The new Brazilian administration promises to to restart construction of an obsolete nuclear station started in the 70’s but never completed. Brazilian civil society organizations are calling for an audit of the project.

☢ It’s Time to Make Electricity Savings Real This pamphlet explains how the Ford Gov't can follow through on its promise to lower electricity bills by making a deal to import low-cost power from Quebec. ☢ Petition to Premier Ford Premier Ford must develop a strategy to ensure that Ontario rapidly becomes a world leader in the production and use of EVs (electric vehicles) and other low-carbon technologies.

☢ Canadian Government must protect our rivers from radioactive waste Please sign the petition to protect the Ottawa and Winnipeg Rivers currently threatened by three Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL’s) nuclear waste dump proposals.

☢ Calling Citizen Scientists for Radiation Collection Project We’re looking for citizen radiation monitors interested in contributing to citizen science, and for funders whose support can help make the technology possible for those who can't afford it. For more info see here. If interested (either as a participant or as a funder), please contact mcneill.janet at gmail.com

☢ Sign our petitions to Close Pickering and to Buy Quebec Power. And share them with your friends. Watch our 2 min. video here.
