It's time for nations to unite around an International Green New Deal

Several countries have proposed their own versions of a Green New Deal, but climate change knows no borders. We need a global response. The promise of an International Green New Deal to is to avoid the pitfalls of cold war politics and unite humanity in the only project capable of preserving a habitable planet. To do this, however, we need a powerful progressive international movement to demand that our leaders begin to act beyond their own borders. Let’s start building it. The children are watching.

Quebec’s ‘Climate Spring’ speaks to broad support for environmental action

A few weeks ago, 150,000 students in Quebec took to the streets to demand climate action. In Montreal, more than 100,000 young people flooded downtown in the best attended of thousands of events in the global movement that saw more than 1.4 million students go on strike for the climate in a single day. In the span of a few months, 317 Quebec municipalities, representing almost 74% of the population of Quebec, have endorsed a Declaration of Climate Emergency; close to 268,0000 individuals have signed a pact to individually and collectively minimize their footprint and pushing for the adoption of a climate law; and a class action on behalf of all Quebecers 35 and under has been filed against the federal government for inaction on the climate file.

The Future of Foods: Great Tasting, Healthy Foods for a Low Carbon World

Thur. May 2, 12:15 - 1:45 p.m.

Webinar

What is for dinner in the new carbon economy? The food industry is among the three largest emitters of greenhouse gases. Clearly the food system must transform operations to reduce its carbon footprint and help avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Sustainable growth requires a transformation in food systems through adoption of ag innovations, commercialization of plant-based meat substitutes, and dietary changes as well as policies and dietary guidelines that promote sustainable and resilience agricultural supply chains and consumer choices. How the public thinks about and accepts new food products is key to creating market demand for healthier and low carbon food.

Emergency Mass Action for Mining Justice

Sat. May 4, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Christie Pits Park, Bloor and Christie

With less than six months left in his mandate, Trudeau is about to break another promise. The proposed ombudsperson for responsible enterprise would have given people harmed by Canadian mining abroad a tool to begin to hold these corporations to account. However, a troubling announcement made on April 8 makes it clear that they instead intend to create a powerless position that will do nothing to help those harmed by these industries. There is still time to act! The final decision on the ombudsperson powers will be made in a month's time… so the time is now to pressure the government and demand no more broken promises!

Decolonizing the Heart Workshop: Deep Learning for Deep Change

Sat. May 4, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Toronto United Mennonite Church, 1774 Queen Street East

Reconciliation requires building relationships; building relationships requires more than coming together over issues; decolonizing our own hearts is necessary before we can work together for transformation. We begin by sharing our stories. Our aim in this day-long workshop is to explore ways of being that keep us apart and ways that bring us together. Some of the tools we’ll be using are storytelling, role-playing, mapping social relationships, effective facilitation skills, fundamentals for having difficult conversations, and more. Free.
