How would a Canadian Green New Deal work?
The essence of the Green New Deal is a swift transition to renewables that ensures equitable access to fair wage, full benefit, unionized livelihoods for all Americans. It consists of seven goals for drastically cutting carbon emissions. These goals will be met through policies that address historic inequalities based on poverty, race, and gender. And, like the original New Deal, it will be completely government funded and administered.

Canada Out of NATO monthly protest
Tuesday, September 17, noon - 1 p.m.
NATO Association of Canada Office, 48 Yonge St (corner with Wellington)
Every month this year, the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) will be holding a peace vigil outside the NATO Association of Canada headquarters in downtown Toronto (48 Yonge St. corner with Wellington St.). This year is the 70th anniversary of this male-dominated military alliance and Cold War relic that threatens our security with weapons and war. NATO puts intense pressure on the Canadian government to increase military spending and is preventing Canada from joining the UN Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons. VOW is calling for the Canadian government to withdraw from NATO and work through the United Nations on disarmament and the Sustainable Development Goals that will bring genuine human security. No to NATO; yes to peace, nonviolence and sustainability! Organized by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW: www.vowpeace.org (Afterward join us for lunch.)

Freeland: Stop the Coup Against Venezuela! Stop the Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia!
Tuesday, September 17, 3 - 4 p.m.
Outside the office of Minister of Foreign Affairs MP Chrystia Freeland, 344 Bloor Street West Suite 510
No interference - end the sanctions against Venezuela! The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) will be delivering a letter and holding a rally outside the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland to object to her/the federal government's interference and sanctions against Venezuela and to the continuing arms sales to Saudi Arabia that is exacerbating the war in Yemen – the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Canada, the Lima Group and the US are orchestrating a coup against Venezuela. The sanctions and interference against the country are blatant violations of international law. We are also opposed to Canada’s participation in the Lima Group and call for a peaceful, negotiated solution & the lifting of sanctions to end the crisis in Venezuela. Please bring flags and banners for Venezuela. An action by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW): www.vowpeace.org #HandsOffVenezuela #CancelArmsSalestoSaudiArabia #ExportPeace

Toronto Climate Film Festival - The Human Element
Thursday, Sept. 19, 7 - 9 p.m.
Eglinton St. George’s United Church, South Studio
During his four-decade career as a photographer and explorer, James Balog has focused his lens on the complex relationship between humans and nature. Human activity has now surpassed all other forces shaping our world. In an arresting new documentary from the producers of Racing Extinction, The Cove and Chasing Ice, environmental photographer James Balog captures the lives of people on the front lines of climate change. With rare compassion and heart, this film inspires us to re-evaluate our relationship with the natural world. The screening will open with a short video documenting the impact of development on the Beaver Lake Cree nation. Following the screening Lyn Adamson, co-chair of ClimateFast, will speak on climate activism at a crucial time. She will introduce the Kitchen Table Climate Conversation campaign, designed to bring our communities together to address our climate challenges with the knowledge and tools we need to make a difference. Radical History of the Catholic Worker Community in Toronto
Thur. Sept. 19, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Parkdale Free School, 5 Close Ave.
Join us for a peoples' history event recounting the radical story of Parkdale’s Catholic Worker Community. Founded in 1990, the former Toronto Catholic Worker community moved into Parkdale in 1993 where it remained until its dissolution in 2010. At its height, the community included about thirty people living in six households located at the bottom of Close Avenue. The Catholic Worker is an anarchist pacifist movement inspired by Catholic social teaching that envisions a grass-roots social revolution proceeding from individual and collective action for the common good; a new society built on the shell of the old where it is easier to be good.

In her new collection of essays, On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal Klein investigates the climate crisis not only as a profound political challenge but as a spiritual and imaginative one, as well.
