T.O. Greenspiration Events: 2020 vision

Happy 2020 to all those who love this planet and are actively engaged in ushering in an age of sustainability and harmony with the natural world - where our energy needs are met through sun, wind, water & geothermal heat rather than from burning fossil fuels or running plutonium-producing nuclear power plants, and where warfare, armies and trillion dollar expenditures on armaments are things of the past. In optometry, 2020 represents (near) perfect vision - let us all aspire to 2020 vision as we tackle the challenges before us. - angela

2019 Wraps Up The Hottest Decade In Recorded Human History

It also appears that 2019 will wind up as either the second or third warmest year on record. This would mean that all of the ten warmest years on record have come since 2005, with eight of the top ten occurring in the decade now ending.

Please sign the petition to Stop BWXT’s License Renewal: Shut Down the Uranium Processing Plant at Lansdowne and Dupont

Uranium is toxic, carcinogenic, and radioactive. BWXT acknowledges it releases uranium into Toronto’s air and water and that “airborne particles can expose members of the public via inhalation.” The closer you reside to this processing plant, the more likely it is you are inhaling and ingesting these carcinogens.

Climate Emergency: A 26-Week Transition Program for Canada

What could the government of Canada do if its Ministers, MPs and civil servants really understood the severity of the climate emergency, and the urgency of the need? This 40-page paper shows how we could target a 65% reduction in emissions by 2030 and 100% by 2040. It proposes 164 new policies and programs, financed by $63 billion a year in new investments, without raising taxes or increasing public sector borrowing. The new programs and policies are announced every Monday morning between January 6th and the end of June. To learn what they are, read on. By Guy Dauncey, FRSA, PIBC (Hon)

Change the Building Code - Living in Place campaign

The Living in Place campaign, initiated by the Older Women’s Network, calls for the Ontario Building Code to be changed to require that every unit in all new apartment & condo buildings be universal design (fully accessible) so anyone of any age or ability can live there. Over 22% of Canadians live with some form of disability, yet are overlooked by builders, even though the cost of accessibility is less than 1% more. Thousands are forced out of their homes, and the result is overflowing beds at hospitals and long-term care facilities, and long waiting lists. Barrier-free housing is a human right. As part of their collaborative action plan, they are seeking endorsement by organizations. Please email your organization’s letter of endorsement to <livinginplaceto at gmail.com>

Eyes to the Frontlines. Feet to the Streets.

Tues. Jan. 7, noon

200 Bay Street, (entrance just north of Front Street)

A year ago, heavily-armed RCMP officers invaded unceded Wet’suwet’en territory. It came to light recently that they were prepared to use lethal force to evict Indigenous land defenders to make way for industry. Last week the BC Supreme Court ruled against Wet’suwet’en land defenders in “northern BC”, permitting the forced removal (again!) of people and structures to aid in the construction of the Coastal GasLink (CGL) natural gas pipeline. The impending court-sanctioned invasion is a direct attack on the Wet’suwet’en people and makes a mockery of Canada’s reconciliation efforts. The time is now - we must show up for land defenders and stop the invasion of unceded Indigenous territories! Toronto is home to the offices to the pipeline owners, financiers and investors. Join us in the financial district to tell CGL and its backers to get off unceded Wet’suwet’en land!

Why Are People Homeless In Toronto?

Sun. Jan. 12, 5 - 7 pm.

Lawrence Park Community Church 2180 Bayview

There is no right to shelter or housing in Canada. Over the past three decades, a series of federal governments cut funding for social programs and eliminated our national housing program, leaving hundreds of thousands of people victim to the tsunami of homelessness that was declared a national disaster twenty years ago. No one knows this reality better than Cathy Crowe, who witnessed the explosion of homelessness across Canada while working as a Street Nurse. This fallout was accompanied by great suffering, inhumane shelter conditions, new disease outbreaks, and clusters of homeless deaths. It is a reality that spans across the entire country. Soul Table presents a community meal and speaker event with street nurse, activist and author Cathy Crowe. Free/pwyc.
