The World
☢ Coronovirus pandemic could cripple the nuclear industry Nuclear power facilities have this one problem that is unique to the nuclear industry, and that is, the need for exceptional security. No other industry has these risks of radioactive accident and special vulnerability to terrorism.

☢ US Nuclear regulators ease some power reactor regs in response to COVID-19 In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its strain on available nuclear plant personnel, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is allowing power reactor operators to apply for temporary exemptions from some regulations. I mean, what could go wrong?

☢ Coronavirus will disrupt normal refueling practices for nuclear facilities as staffing concerns grow The energy industry has broadly bemoaned shortages in a specialized workforce due to COVID-19 precautions and the same applies to nuclear workers.

☢ COVID-19 & Nuclear Risk: Refueling Nukes Isn’t Like A NASCAR Pit-stop Enviros discuss their concerns caused by lax oversight and reducing safety inspections at nuclear power refueling outages because of #COVID-19. 56 min. podcast.

☢ COVID-19/Nuclear Dangers: Calling Out Industry Refueling, Safety Lies 1 hr. podcast with Arnie and Maggie Gundersen

☢ Sellafield nuclear waste site to close due to coronavirus Magnox reprocessing plant will begin controlled shutdown after 8% of staff self-isolate.

☢ Masses of tiny shrimp shut down nuclear power plant in southern China twice in one week

☢ Radioactive forest near Chernobyl nuclear plant catches fire A fire has broken out in a Ukrainian forest within the thousand-square-mile exclusion zone of the abandoned nuclear power plant at Chernobyl. Radiation spiked 16 times above average after forest fire near Chernobyl.

☢ Letter to PM Justin Trudeau requesting urgent attention to nuclear safety gaps in Canada

Ontario
☢ Ontario's energy plans a gas, gas, gas Enbridge's plan to build $204 M pipeline to carry fracked gas from the US into Ontario coincides with the Ford gov't's push for more gas-powered electricity.

☢ Bruce Power scaling back workforce at nuclear plant in coronavirus fallout The Bruce nuclear station - the largest in the world - has scaled back its active workforce by two-thirds in the coronavirus fallout.

☢ Employee at Pickering nuclear station tests positive for COVID-19: OPG

☢ Stop BWXT uranium plant downtown Toronto Archive of the video presentations at the Mar. 2-3 Toronto hearing, and March 4-6 Peterborough hearing.

Renewables and Conservation
☼ Cheap Renewable Energy Just Shut Down a Nuclear Reactor The latest victim of the global slump in energy prices is an old Swedish nuclear reactor that will stay offline until at least the end of summer. With Ontario’s demand down 10% since the start of covid-19, we should shut down Pickering, North America’s highest cost nuclear station.

☼ California to add 25GW of renewables by 2030 California’s green energy fleet is to undergo a deep-reaching transformation in the space of a decade under new targets. Solar and energy storage batteries will be the two cornerstone technologies of the plan which will effectively more than double California’s current installed green energy capacity.

☼ U of T Field site of geothermal energy The University of Toronto has embarked on the largest geo-thermal installation in the country. This project will mean a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for heating and cooling university buildings, compared with natural gas.

Take Action
