Degrowth: New Roots for the Economy

The signatories of this letter - more than 1,100 experts and over 70 organizations from more than 60 countries - offer five principles for the recovery of our economy and the basis of creating a just society. 1) Put life at the center of our economic systems. 2) Radically reevaluate how much and what work is necessary for a good life for all. 3) Organize society around the provision of essential goods and services. 4) Democratize society. 5) Base political and economic systems on the principle of solidarity.

Canada

Let’s build a more resilient Canada. Here's how.

1. Invest stimulus into Canada’s fast-growing clean energy and cleantech sectors and businesses committed to the local production and export of world-leading low- and zero-carbon commodities;

2. Act quickly to support clean energy and cleantech solutions and businesses by expanding existing initiatives and programs; and

3. Share loud and clear that Canada will continue and expand on its best-in-class climate and environmental policies.

Who benefits? An investigation of foreign ownership in the Alberta tar sands

Findings reveal that more than 70 per cent of tar sands production is owned by investors and shareholders outside Canada's borders, sending billions out of the country each year. Reclamation of the tar sands, conventional oil and gas wells, and pipelines in Alberta will cost an estimated $260 billion. There is increasing concern that taxpayers, not polluters, will be left holding the bill for the clean up of this massive toxic mess.

COVID-19 latest hurdle in Canada's long road to buying new fighter jets for $19 Billion

Spending $19 B of public money on fighter jets makes no sense given all the other priorities we face in Canada.

Spending $19 billion on fighter jets won’t fight COVID-19 or climate change

Instead of buying a new weapons system, the federal government should disarm and invest in a Green New Deal

Ontario

Ontario's Growing Climate Crisis

The Ford Gov't just paid $2.8 billion for 3 gas-fired power plants - this will ramp up greenhouse gas pollution from our electricity sector by more than 400%. There are far better ways to keep our lights on, starting with maximizing our energy efficiency efforts, making a deal with Quebec for low-cost water power and developing cost-effective renewable energy projects right here in Ontario. Read more and send a message to Doug Ford here.
