Throne Speech: meh or yay?

Greenpeace scorecard on the Throne Speech tells you whether or not the government’s plans will curb inequality and fix the climate crisis.

On energy they write: Over the last few weeks, the Liberals have been dropping not-so-subtle hints that they plan to roll out green measures alongside a host of dirty “false solutions”: measures that sound green, but actually cause environmental damage. Specifically, they indicated they will: expand fracking (natural gas) and roll out unproven and risky nuclear reactors. This is the kind of greenwashing that would set our climate goals back and endanger our future.

Nuclear power no solution to climate change

At a time when action on climate change has never been more urgent, the federal Liberals want to throw billions of dollars at non-existent technology (Small Modular Nuclear Reactors) that will not make a difference for decades, if ever... The nuclear industry is grasping at straws. Its technology is obsolete, its promises unfulfilled and its costs ever rising. https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/gibbons-nuclear-power-no-solution-to-climate-change

New nuclear is NOT part of the path to net zero.

Send a letter here to Minster of Natural Resources O’Regan and your Member of Parliament. Call upon the federal government to minimize the generation of radioactive waste and to cease all support and taxpayer funding for small modular nuclear reactors.

Turner’s last political act was for nuclear abolition; Trudeau take note

Canada has yet to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) that opened for signature at the United Nations three years ago. To mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on Sept. 26, dozens of peace and justice groups across Canada have released an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to show leadership for nuclear disarmament like his father and to join the treaty to help eliminate the worst weapons of mass destruction.

Climate Action Tracker

The Climate Action Tracker (CAT) is an independent scientific analysis produced by two research organisations tracking climate action around the world. The Canadian government is at a crossroads: it could either continue with the slow implementation of an inadequate climate plan, or adopt a recovery package that accelerates the transition to a zero emissions future.

Can Capitalism Survive Climate Change? With Noam Chomsky and Robert Pollin

Tues. Sept. 29, 1 - 2 p.m. EDT xxx check what EDT is

Noam Chomsky and economist Robert Pollin talk about the themes of the new book they have written together, The Climate Crisis and the Global Green New Deal. Chomsky and Pollin will argue that the leaders of the US, the most powerful state in human history, are dedicating themselves with a passion to destroying the prospects for organised human life. At the same time, the authors argue, there is a solution at hand, which is the Green New Deal. Putting meat on the bones of the Green New Deal starts with a simple idea: we have to stop burning fossil fuels to produce energy within the next thirty years at most. But the Green New Deal will fail if it doesn’t protect the jobs and livelihoods of working people and support rising living standards for the poor throughout the world. The programme is entirely realistic in terms of its economic and technical features, say Chomsky and Pollin. But is it politically feasible? And what do we need to do to build the political force to make a global Green New Deal a reality?

A Good War - Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency in Manitoba

Tues. Sept. 29, 7 p.m. Central time

In his book, author Seth Klein explores how we can align our politics and economy with what the science says we must do to address the climate crisis. But he brings an original and uniquely hopeful take to this challenge, based on lessons we can draw from the Second World War, when Canada faced a similarly existential threat. According to Seth, Canada’s wartime experience provides an inspirational reminder that we have done this before. We have mobilized in common cause across class, race and gender, and entirely retooled our economy in the space of a few short years. Join us for an evening of music, a reading, author Q&A, and a panel discussion with local climate emergency activists.

How Cycling Infrastructure Can Save Lives

Cities across the globe, including Toronto, have invested in active transportation infrastructure as part of COVID-19 response and recovery efforts. Leading a team of epidemiologists, Dr. Anne Harris (Associate Professor, School of Occupational and Public Health, Ryerson University) investigated how different cycling infrastructure designs could reduce injuries and fatalities along Bloor-Danforth and how separated cycling infrastructure is now even more critical to supporting public health, with more people choosing to bike during the pandemic.
