Help the Ontario Clean Air Alliance defund nuclear and phase out gas plants by making a year-end donation today. Thank you! - Angela and Jack, OCAA staff

The World

SMRs do not belong in a climate action plan. We are in a climate emergency.

☢ Federal funding for new nuclear reactors is a serious mistake that blocks swift action on climate change Open Letter from more than 100 Canadian Women Community Leaders

☢ Climate Action and Nuclear Energy: The Case Against Small Modular Reactors in Canada The Canadian Environmental Law Association has launched an action page to support citizens concerned by plans for a new rush of nuclear reactors.

☢ Canada re-enters nuclear weapons business with small modular reactors Canada is poised to play a central role in the global nuclear weapons business, much as it did during the Second World War, with its development of 'small modular' nuclear reactors.

☢ Why the Liberals' nuclear power plan is a pipe dream Not only is this form of power expensive compared to the alternatives, we still haven't resolved issues around radioactive contamination and hazardous waste streams.

☢ Canada’s newest nuclear industry dream is a potential nightmare SMRs are hardly the clean technology needed for the next generation.

☢ Environmental groups, three opposition parties, First Nations oppose federal government’s plan to fund new nuclear reactors Groups from across Canada called on the federal government to halt its plans to fund experimental new small nuclear reactors (SMRs) and to take real action against climate change by investing more in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

☢ Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMRs):A dangerous distraction from real climate action in Canada – a primer by Canadian Environmental Law Association. SMRs are expensive and commercially unviable; not immune from accidents; not clean energy and their waste burdens future generations; rely on enriched uranium that can be used to make nuclear weapons; are exempt from Canada’s foremost environmental assessment law.

☢ Are New Brunswick’s prototype nuclear reactors part of a climate action plan? [Part 1]

☢ Why are the federal and New Brunswick governments funding prototype nuclear reactors? [Part 2]

☢ Why we should oppose nuclear power We need urgently to decarbonise our economies and create millions of well-paid, unionised green jobs while doing so. But this can only be done through mass investment in renewables, and keeping fossil fuels in the ground. More nuclear means dither, delay, and another potential cause of catastrophe. By Dr. Ian Fairlie.

Ontario
☢ OPG’s climate plan is a road to failure More nukes, more gas, less conservation, less renewables. Is this the best we can get from our publicly owned power utility?

☢ Stop the Dash to Gas and Green the Grid Gas is not the bridge to a clean energy future that fossil fuel companies and governments would have us believe. Gas is a bridge to nowhere.

Renewables and Conservation
☼ 100% Clean, Renewable Energy and Storage for Everything 1 hour recording with Mark Jacobson

☼ Wind & Solar Are Cheaper Than Everything

☼ Imagining A World With Unlimited Clean Energy The latest report from RethinkX predicts that the combination of solar, wind, and battery storage will completely disrupt the utility industry by 2030.

☼ A (non-political) power shift Spanish utility will invest US$88 billion through 2025 as part of a plan to triple its renewable energy capacity by 2030 - quadrupling its solar capacity, while off-shore wind is set to grow seven-fold.

☼ EU set to deny gas power plants a green investment label Power plants fueled by natural gas will not be classed as a sustainable investment in Europe, steering billions of euros into low-carbon projects to help the EU hit ambitious climate goals and limit greenwashing.

Take Action
☢ Petition opposing federal support for SMNRs We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Gov't of Canada to cease all support and taxpayer funding for small modular nuclear reactors. Two more petitions opposing funding to SMRs are here and here.

☢ Nuclear waste should not be buried underground in Ontario – Petition The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is proposing a deep geological repository to abandon spent nuclear fuel bundles underground in South Bruce, Ontario. Support the community in their request for a referendum.

☢ End the nuclear gravy train Send a message to Premier Ford and opposition leaders telling them that we need to defund the nuclear industry to prevent our electricity rates from sky rocketing.

☢ Please contact Premier Ford and your local MPP here and tell them that you want Ontario to seek funding from the Canada Infrastructure Bank for a new 20 km transmission line that will double our ability to buy low-cost water power from our next door neighbour. Here too.

☢ Send a message to all four Ontario Party Leaders asking them to close the Pickering Nuclear Station in 2024 when its license expires and immediately dismantle the station.

☢ Sign the petitions to phase out Ontario gas plants and immediately dismantle the Pickering Nuclear Station after shutdown in 2024

☢ Order your FREE leaflets here calling on the Ford Government to phase out gas plants and immediately dismantle Pickering Nuclear Station after shutdown in 2024. High school students can gain volunteer service hours. Contact angela at cleanairalliance.org for more info.
