Biden’s climate initiatives put Trudeau on the spot

Canada’s plans look like mere greenwashing compared to the EU, China and the U.S. The latest "all of the above" formula, announced in December 2020, is one where the minuses cancel the pluses.  For example, tar sands emissions have gone up 456% between 1990 and 2018 and if the entire reserves are to be exploited, it would exceed the world's carbon budget.  This is less than a zero sum game.  Emissions went up between 2017 and 2018.

Don't let Premier Ford fast-track two massive highways through Ontario’s Greenbelt, rivers and forests

https://act.environmentaldefence.ca/page/74477/action/1

Highway 413 is a proposed mega-highway west of Toronto that was cancelled by the previous Ontario government, but revived by the current one. This unneeded highway will cause irreversible environmental damage within federal jurisdiction, including harm to fish habitat, multiple federal species at risk, and dozens of significant wetlands, forests, and important ecosystems.

Call on Canada and Ontario to establish an immediate moratorium in the Ring of Fire

We now invite you to join us as we call on Canada and Ontario to honour and protect inherent Indigenous and treaty rights, and to take immediate actions to address the urgent health, housing, and water crises facing communities. 100 Groups Demand Transparency in Canada's Review of Radioactive Waste Policy and Waste Management Strategies

The groups have expressed deep concern over the recently announced review of Canada’s nuclear waste policies. Particularly, they wrote, it is worrisome that the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, which is a conglomerate of nuclear power generators, be given a leading role in conducting this review.

Wayne Scott Community Service Award

The Wayne Scott Community Service Award has been established in Wayne’s memory to recognize a community group that makes a special contribution to the cause of active transportation by fighting for equity, health, climate justice, or road safety — issues to which Wayne devoted many years of effort and passion. We hope to award a community group chosen each year for the next five years with the funds that are raised in Wayne's honour.

Impacts and Challenges of Plastic Pollution Facing the Great Lakes Basin

Mon. March 1, 1 p.m. EST

Studies in the Great Lakes basin are showing an ever-increasing presence and impacts associated with plastic pollution. Solving this problem will require a binational response. Unfortunately, the U.S. and Canadian governments responsible for protecting the health of the Great Lakes Basin have not yet worked together to address this cross-basin problem. On the contrary, at the end of last year, the two federal governments took an action that is likely to make the risk greater. Learn about this new Canada-U.S. arrangement.

Fossil Banks, No Thanks

Wed. March 3, 1 p.m. EST

On Feb. 25, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) promised to achieve net-zero emissions across its lending operations by 2050. But what’s the real story behind such marketable, apparently green, Big Bank announcements? Since the Paris Agreement, Canada’s five major banks have financed fossil fuels to the tune of $C 610 billion globally, while providing 70% of the money for tar-sands expansion (C$93 billion). Join Time 4 Action for a thorough examination of Canadian and

international bank support for the destructive fossil fuel industry.

Facing the Threat of Mass Evictions

Wed. March 3, 11 am - 12:30 pm EST

In various countries, including Canada, one of the temporary measures to the lockdowns has been to put in place a partial ban on evictions. The removal of these protections threatens to create a situation of mass housing evictions. In Toronto, this is already unfolding. Bold forms of action are being taken by tenants facing eviction and their allies. Speakers will look at the struggles that are unfolding, discuss the support and solidarity those who are facing attack require, and look at the broader demands around housing that have to be pursued in the next period.
