Ban polluting nuclear energy from “clean power” funds in federal budget! It's a dirty, dangerous distraction from climate action. Send a message to federal MPs here.

The World
☢ Billionaires leading push for nuclear reactors in Canadian mining This billionaires' nuclear club has been working closely for years with Natural Resources Canada in the push for small modular reactors, especially for use in off-grid mining.

☢ Budget may reveal extent of federal support for risky new nuclear reactors More than 100 Indigenous and civil society groups across Canada are now opposed to the new nuclear reactors, which are being pushed by the federal gov't and four provinces – SK, ON, NB and AB.

☢ Reforms needed at Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

☢ Former prime minister Jean Chrétien part of secretive project to store nuclear waste in Labrador, emails show

☢ More nuclear reactors (SMRs): A bad investment for New Brunswick More here.

☢ Wolastoq Grand Council Resolution opposing nuclear energy and nuclear waste on traditional Wolastoq territory, NB Wolastoqewi Elders were asked to describe the word "Nuclear". They deliberated then came up with the word “Askomiw ‘Sanaqok” - forever dangerous to life.

☢ New Brunswick’s risky plutonium plan Pierre Elliot Trudeau banned the extraction of plutonium from used nuclear fuel in Canada. Last week Justin Trudeau lifted the ban, handing over $50M in taxpayer funds to a private company from the UK to develop a technology that proposes to extract plutonium from used nuclear fuel from the Point Lepreau reactor on the Bay of Fundy.

☢ Small Modular Reactors and Proliferation / Tolerance of Nuclear Weapons

☢ Council can do more to protect the Ottawa River from radioactive leaks Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' plan for a radioactive waste landfill and a nuclear reactor disposal facility upstream from Ottawa must be rethought. And watch a 90 min. recording of a townhall on this.

Ontario
☢ Stunning revelations about Pickering Nuclear Station’s safety were published in the Globe and Mail detailing how the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) signed off on a 10-year licence extension despite knowing that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) was working with deeply flawed data. More here and here. ☢ Nuclear plant at risk of 'Fukushima-type accident' “It turns out that OPG does not have the data to show that Pickering’s pressure tubes are still safe for service. If the pressure tubes aren’t fit for service they could potentially rupture or break, and in the worst-case scenario there could be a Fukushima-type accident.”
☢ Enriched Secrecy: BWXT’s Radioactive Plans A detailed site plan may reveal if BWXT in Peterborough, ON is planning to include working with highly radioactive enriched uranium to fuel a fleet of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMNRs) currently in development. More here.

Renewables and Conservation
☼ Hydro-Québec would love to sell more power to Ontario, but the Ontario’s reliance on nuclear energy and gas muddies the picture.

☼ Toronto City Council call for phase-out of Ontario’s gas plants That makes 23 ON municipalities, 2 provincial parties, and more than 60 organizations that are calling for ON gas power to be replaced with conservation, wind, solar, and water power and storage from QC.

☼ Ontario must move quickly to phase out gas-fired electricity generation ON is planning to increase the use of gas-fired power 500% to replace aging nuclear, a disastrous strategy for our climate. My op-ed.

☼ Scotland’s renewable energy matched 97% of demand in 2020

Take Action

☢ Tell Ottawa: no more funding for nuclear reactors! Once again, the federal government is planning to waste taxpayers dollars on a new nuclear technology which is far more hype than substance with no working prototypes in Canada.

☢ Tell the CNSC to put safety before OPG's profits The CNSC must put a moratorium on the continued operation of the Pickering nuclear station until OPG has submitted proper safety data.

☢ Say no to new nuclear in the GTA Tell our political leaders that you want Ontario to invest in wind and solar energy, not a new GTA nuclear reactor.

☢ Decommission the Pickering Nuclear Station immediately after shutdown in 2024 This would provide a jobs transition for the workers and would reclaim the Pickering waterfront.

☢ Nuclear waste should not be buried underground in Ontario – Petition The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is proposing a deep geological repository to abandon spent nuclear fuel bundles underground in South Bruce. Support the community in their request for a referendum.

☢ International Petition Against the Discharge of Contaminated Water from Fukushima into the Sea And here's another.

☢ Order your FREE leaflets here calling on the Ford Government to phase out gas power plants, immediately dismantle the Pickering nuclear station after shutdown in 2024, and calling on Chrystia Freeland to not fund new nuclear in the GTA. High school students can claim volunteer hours distributing leaflets to mailboxes in their neighbourhoods.
