Please send a message to Minister Freeland here urging her to back ready-to-roll renewable solutions, not costly nuclear.
The World
☢ Net Zero Without Nuclear The case against nuclear power is stronger than ever. So is the pro-nuclear propaganda.

☢ Will Canada remain a credible non-proliferation partner? Out of the spotlight, the start-up company Moltex Energy received a federal grant to develop a nuclear project in New Brunswick that experts say will undermine Canada’s credibility as a non-proliferation partner.

☢ Nuclear Energy Will Not Be the Solution to Climate Change Given the long lead times to develop full-scale prototypes of new advanced designs, and the time required to build a manufacturing and customer base to make nuclear economically competitive, it is unlikely that nuclear power will reduce our carbon energy footprint even in 20 years.

☢ Is nuclear winning? 1-hour video discussion with M.V. Ramana and Susan O'Donnell disputing statements by journalist Doug Saunders about the viability of nuclear power in Canada and the world.

☢ Is smaller better when it comes to nuclear? David Suzuki weighs in on why pursuing nuclear at the expense of renewables is costly, dangerous and unnecessary.

☢ Nuclear industry’s unfounded claims let it survive The nuclear industry’s unfounded claims let it rely on “dark arts”, ignoring much better ways to cut carbon emissions.

☢ Are Canadian uranium workers still more likely to die from lung cancer? The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is leading a national study examining incidences of lung cancer in uranium workers from across the country.

☢ Radioactive Podcast series with experts on nuclear power and waste in Canada.

☢ Why Can't Nuclear Power be Safe? 1-hour discussion with Gregory Jaczko, past chair of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission under Obama. He found that lobbyists' political pressures make it impossible to keep nukes safe.

Ontario
☢ Astounding safety admission and inadequate response from our Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) In the wake of revelations about dangerous conditions discovered in the critical pressure tube system in two Bruce Nuclear reactors, the CNSC has ordered our nuclear operators to not restart any shutdown reactors before receiving approval from Commission inspectors, suggesting that the safe operation of these reactors cannot be guaranteed.

☢ People are trying to stop a new nuclear reactor from being built near Toronto While some local politicians support a new nuclear reactor in the GTA, the Ontario Clean Air Alliance has launched a campaign in opposition, which includes leaflet-dropping to drum up awareness.

☢ Ontario is planning to contract for more gas-fired power More fracked gas? No thanks! Please click here to ask Energy Minister Todd Smith to direct the IESO to move Ontario towards a zero-emissions electricity grid, not increased dependency on climate harming fracked gas.

Renewables and Conservation
☼ Renewables overtake coal and nuclear to become 2nd biggest grid source in US The combination of all renewable energy sources in the US generated the second largest share of electricity generation in 2020, behind natural gas.

☼ The Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative (OREC) has launched a new round of financing for the purchase of two wind Turbines near Zurich (Huron County) and Tiverton (Bruce County). It is the mandate of OREC to enable local residents to own the renewable energy generation assets in their immediate community so that the electrons, jobs and profits remain local.

Take Action
☢ Tell Ottawa: no more funding for new nuclear reactors Tell federal Ministers to stop wasting our $ on polluting nuclear reactors.

☢ Tell the CNSC to put safety before OPG's profits The CNSC must put a moratorium on the continued operation of the Pickering nuclear station until OPG has submitted proper safety data.

☢ Say no to new nuclear in the GTA Tell Ontario's political leaders that you want investments in wind and solar energy, not a new GTA nuclear reactor.

☢ Decommission the Pickering Nuclear Station immediately after shutdown in 2024 This would provide a jobs transition for the workers and would reclaim the Pickering waterfront.

☢ Nuclear waste should not be buried and abandoned The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is proposing a deep geological repository to abandon spent nuclear fuel bundles underground in South Bruce, Ontario. Support the community in their request for a referendum.

☢ Say no to nuclear waste in Labrador The citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador do not want to be the nuke waste dump for the world.

☢ International Petition Against the Discharge of Contaminated Water from Fukushima into the Sea And here's another.

Events

☢ Hope for the Earth: Canada, Sign the Ban Treaty Friday, August 6, 7 p.m. EST. To honor of the 76th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, peace activists and artists will highlight the importance of Canada's joining the growing number of nations signing the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty, and how we can contribute to the elimination of nuclear weapons.

☢ The Vow From Hiroshima Sun. Aug. 8, 7 p.m. EST. This Canadian premiere screening is an intimate portrait of Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and peace activist.
