The room was filled with homeless people, allies and a range of people spoke against the City`s plan to close the 55 bed harm reduction focused School House Shelter. The Committee heard powerful testimony from those who are forced to rely on the shelter system, front line advocates, union locals representing workers in the neighborhood, and social agencies. It was pointed out by several speakers that this meeting was happening in the same month that conditions in Seaton House men`s shelter led to a violent outburst in which a man was beaten severely with a fire extinguisher, while another homeless man was found dead on Parliament Street. Despite this, the committee voted to proceed with shutting the School House down.<br> <br>This fight doesn't end here. Everything now depends on a community based mobilization in the downtown east and beyond to save the School House.<br>This shelter has to become the place where we draw a line. We must demand that the 35 beds that have already been lost at the School House be replaced immediately. We can`t let this shelter sit empty with a padlock on its door while people die on the streets. We must organize to take back the School House and take forward the struggle in this City for the right to decent and affordable housing. Join us for a public community meeting on Tuesday, July 17th to talk about what we all want to do next to save the School House and fight for what poor people need and deserve in this neighborhood!<br> <br>Facebook event here: <a href="http://www.facebook.com/events/416052675104144/">http://www.facebook.com/events/416052675104144/</a><br>*snacks, childcare, and tokens provided<br>Contact: Ontario Coalition Against Poverty: 416-899-6445 / ocap@tao.ca </span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Downtown East Committee to Stop the Cuts: <a href="mailto:TorontoDTE@gmail.com">TorontoDTE@gmail.com</a><br>Download the poster here: http://ocap.ca/files/jul-17-poster.pdf<br>Download the flyer here: http://ocap.ca/files/jul-17-flyer-front.pdf<br>and http://ocap.ca/files/jul-17-flyer-back.pdf<br> <br></span></font><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br></span></font></div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><font class="Apple-style-span" size="5" color="#e09000"><b>The Usual Suspects<br></b></font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Public Forum hosted by Toronto Police Accountability Coalition</span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Tuesday, July 17, 7 pm</span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">The 519 Community Centre, 519 Church Street just north of Wellesley</span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Wheelchair accessible</span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">The main purpose of the forum is to discuss carding and profiling from the point of view of racialized youth, who we are specifically inviting to attend and talk at this meeting. Hydroelectric damming, natural gas fracturing, nuclear reactors and the oil sands present diverse perils and benefits. What is the best path? An OPP officer shot him in the chest, only a few minutes after they had first encountered on the shore of Osnaburgh Lake near the town of Pickle Lake, Ontario. Last fall, Levi's family, along with the family of Douglas Minty who was also shot by police last June- asked a Superior Court judge to put an end to the long standing practice of lawyer vetting. After a unanimous decision in favour of the families in Ontario's highest court, the OPP appealed the case to the Supreme Court. Now, the families and their lawyers must re-present the case in Canada's highest court, and need to raise funds to fight this battle.<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/444000115631777/permalink/444092902289165/">https://www.facebook.com/events/444000115631777/permalink/444092902289165/</a> <br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><a href="http://justiceforlevi.org/">http://justiceforlevi.org/</a><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><font class="Apple-style-span" size="5" color="#780099"><b>Remembering the Dead, Standing up for the Living<br></b></font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">March and Vigil to Commemorate the Hampstead Accident</span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Sunday July 22, 2012 </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Get on the Bus From Toronto: <a href="http://bit.ly/NaId3E">http://bit.ly/NaId3E</a></span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Six months have passed since the tragic accident that killed eleven people near Hampstead, Ontario. There will be time for plenary discussions, strategy sessions and break-out groups.</span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/199457126847267/">https://www.facebook.com/events/199457126847267/</a></span><br></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------<br></span></font></div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'" size="5" color="#e17913"><b>Make Money As an Urban Farmer with SPIN-Farming®</b></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">with Curtis Stone, Owner/Operator Green City Acres, Kelowna, BC</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">August 15, 8:30 am – noon<br>Ryerson University</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Ready to take your urban farm to the next level?
