But few understand the legal precedent set by his plight. Canadian officials not only helped violate Khadr’s Charter rights; they made it possible for those violations to be made against any of us. Canadian law has changed significantly since 9/11, making the average citizen far more vulnerable to abuses of power than before. Why Should I Care welcomes guest speaker, Dr. Barbara J. Falk, to discuss this important issue. Falk, an instructor at the Canadian Forces College, has not only written on the Khadr case—she’s also taught some of the most powerful figures in the Canadian military, too. Following her prepared remarks, Dr. Falk will take questions from the audience. A Sea Change follows the journey of retired history teacher Sven Huseby on his quest to discover what is happening to the world’s oceans. After reading Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Darkening Sea,” Sven becomes obsessed with the rising acidity of the oceans and what this “sea change” bodes for mankind. His quest takes him to Alaska, California, Washington, and Norway as he uncovers a worldwide crisis that most people are unaware of. Speaking with oceanographers, marine biologists, climatologists, and artists, Sven discovers that global warming is only half the story of the environmental catastrophe that awaits us. Excess carbon dioxide is dissolving in our oceans, changing sea water chemistry. The more acidic water makes it difficult for tiny creatures at the bottom of the food web to form their shells. The effects could work their way up to the fish 1 billion people depend upon for their source of protein.<br><br>Sponsored by Green 13 <a href="http://www.green13toronto.org/home">http://www.green13toronto.org/home</a> </span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><font class="Apple-style-span" size="5" color="#b03c20"><b>Social Democracy After the Cold War - book launch<br></b></font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">edited by Bryan Evans and Ingo Schmidt</span>. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">With Guest speaker: Leo Panitch</span><br><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Wednesday September 19, 6:30 pm</span><br></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">CMA Student Lounge, Room 1-003 (7th floor), Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University, 55 Dundas Street West<br><br>Sponsored by the Centre for Labour Management Relations at Ryerson University and the Centre for Social Justice<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'" size="5" color="#a303a4"><b>My Leaky Body - book launch<br></b></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Hosted by Robin Duke<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Wed. She tells what it’s like to be a leaky body, to live with a debilitating embodied condition that has consequences not just in her healthcare but in all her personal and social relationships. Julie is by turns filled with ‘terror, pain and disgust,’ expected to feel guilt and shame, and yet always sustained by an extraordinarily productive anger. Her condition opens up a commitment to healthcare advocacy that culminates in her exciting workshop performances in My Leaky Body. It’s a revelation to get an insight in her lived experience that is sure to find resonances in all of us. — Margrit Shildrick, author of Leaky Bodies and Boundaries<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/431583860227289/">https://www.facebook.com/events/431583860227289/</a><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><a href="http://www.myleakybody.com/">http://www.myleakybody.com/</a><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><font class="Apple-style-span" size="5" color="#0082a2"><b>Intersectoral Action & Social Determinants of Health: What’s the Evidence? – Webinar<br></b></font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Wed. In this path-breaking book, Jeb Sprague investigates the dangerous world of right-wing paramilitarism in Haiti and its role in undermining the democratic aspirations of the Haitian people. Sprague focuses on the period beginning in 1990 with the rise of Haiti’s first democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and the right-wing movements that succeeded in driving him from power. Over the ensuing two decades, paramilitary violence was largely directed against the poor and supporters of Aristide’s Lavalas movement, taking the lives of thousands of Haitians. Sprague seeks to understand how this occurred, and traces connections between paramilitaries and their elite financial and political backers, in Haiti but also in the United States and the Dominican Republic.<br><br>Sponsored by the Toronto Haiti Action Network and the Caribbean Studies Program at the University of Toronto<br><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/365321186875689/">https://www.facebook.com/events/365321186875689/</a></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><a href="http://thac.ca/event/">http://thac.ca/event/</a>jeb-sprague-paramilitarism-and-the-assault-on-democracy/</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><font class="Apple-style-span" size="5" color="#3e22d4"><b>The City Dark<br></b></font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Wed. The political climate continues to worsen with increased militarism coupled with racism, austerity budgets around providing for essential human needs (globally), de-regulation of necessary restraints, disdain for knowledge by powerful people. We can continue to provide knowledge, ask questions, research the crucial interconnections, act. Our agenda includes describing and assessing a wide range of websites and reports connected broadly with climate justice. Researching GHG emissions of the military, exempt under Kyoto (including research on outsourced military, life-cycle of weapons and all equipment, destruction of carbon sinks). Focusing on current climate effects on the human world. Identifying the political and economic forces that prevent substantial and immediate GHG reductions. The film will be followed by a speaker - University of Toronto Professor Matthew Hoffmann - who will talk a bit about the current state of the climate and what we, as concerned citizens, can do about it.</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Organized by <a href="http://350.org">350.org</a> Toronto Chapter<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'" size="5" color="#b900bf"><b>Climate Fast & Vigil </b></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Sept. 21 - Oct. 2<br> </span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">There are many ways to get involved! Ever since the unjust conviction, the five Cubans have been held in separate U.S. prisons, often in solitary confinement. In fact, the politically-motivated trial and conviction of the Cuban five had nothing to do with threats to U.S. security. They were on a mission to monitor and report on violent groups in Miami that are well known by the U.S. government to be responsible for terrorist acts against the Cuban people. The campaign of bombings, assassinations and other attacks has left 3,478 Cubans dead and 2,099 seriously injured. The Cuban Five were peacefully trying to do what U.S. law enforcement authorities have refused to do - prevent terrorism. As part of an unprecedented international effort to achieve the freedom of the Cuban Five, a Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly is being convoked in Toronto. The Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly aims to act as a forum for education and for launching an appeal to get justice for the Cuban Five, to break the silence of the mainstream media about this case; and to map out the next steps of a broad and united campaign on the Cuban Five in Québec and across the rest of Canada. <br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br><a href="mailto:tribunal.five@gmail.com">tribunal.five@gmail.com</a> www.freethe5peoplestribunal.org</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br></span></font><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'" size="5" color="#b63c00"><b>Bike Pirates Movie Night - Quicksilver</b></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Fri. From expert kite fliers, to kids flying their first kite, there is a space for everyone at WindFest. Kite flying is a fun, safe, creative and multi-cultural activity that anyone can enjoy! We’ll have workshops on how to make kites, and how to fly kites too! There are two well-established communities who love the wind: The Green Energy sector, and kite fliers! WindFest is the first major event that brings these two themes together in a combined celebration of wind power. Whether we’re using wind to spin turbines or to lift beautiful kites off the ground, we’re reminded of the enormous potential of wind energy and the powerful forces of nature that surround us.<br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Brought to you by TREC Renewal Energy Cooperative (TREC) and PigeonHat Productions</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><a href="http://www.WindFest.to/">http://www.WindFest.to/</a> </span></font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; "><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/325148250893284/">https://www.facebook.com/events/325148250893284/</a></span></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------<br></span></font></div><div><div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><font class="Apple-style-span" size="5" color="#009f01"><b>Fresh Fest – at the ON Food Terminal<br></b></font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"> </span><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Sat. The series is designed to enhance people’s personable skills that will enable them to teach, organize, and interact peacefully, democratically, and with mutual respect and accountability. Democratic, community-based education is a largely new concept for a lot of people, and while there are a lot of people who want to teach and organize within it, they don’t necessarily know what that kind of education looks like in practice, because they’ve never experienced it. This series is for those interested in teaching, but unsure about how to do so in popular/democratic education settings; teachers who have begun to teach at free’scool and want to further develop their teaching skills; and for organizers, educators, and community members from all areas who want to develop their democratic facilitation skills.</span><br><br><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Check out the full workshop schedule here: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/345813568841029/">https://www.facebook.com/events/345813568841029/</a> </span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'" size="5" color="#9c00a7"><b>Remembering Partition 1947: Dialogue for Healing and Change<br></b></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Sunday September 23, 2-5 p.m.</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Peace Lounge, 7th Floor South, OISE, 252 Bloor St. W. To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the partition of India and Pakistan, and to celebrate International Day of Peace 2012, InterChange GTA is hosting a dialogue focused on shared understanding, healing and change. It will be a welcoming, inclusive event where people can tell their stories; share their experiences; and seek to understand others. During the event, we'll ask ourselves: 1. What made it possible for people to kill their own neighbours? 2. How do the events of 1947 continue to affect people? 3. How can we move toward healing and reconciliation?<br><br>RSVP and more info: <a href="mailto:community@interchange4peace.org">community@interchange4peace.org</a><br>www.interchange4peace.org</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">---------------------------------------<br>---------------------------------------</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br></span></font></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Times New Roman'"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">------<br><br><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<br>Eulogies and Condolences for Tooker<br>and Stories of ecology and activism<br><a href="http://www.greenspiration.org">http://www.greenspiration.org</a><br><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<br>Join my email list by emailing Angela at:<br>greenspiration@web.ca<br>Write "subscribe" in the subject line<br>and tell me what city/country you live in<br><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<br><br><br></span></font></div><br></body></html>
