Ontario Clean Air Alliance chair Jack Gibbons responded with a letter to the editor which was published (though edited):<br> <br><em><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Dear Editor,</span></em><br><em><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> Margaret Wente’s astonishing claim that nuclear power is cheap is reminiscent of the nuclear industry’s 1950s assertion that nuclear power would be too cheap to meter [“Staying cool?” – July 18th]</span></em><br> <em><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> Unfortunately, there is no evidence to support these claims. In fact, every nuclear project in Ontario’s history has been late and massively over budget – on average by 2.5 times. And the cost overruns have been passed on to Ontario’s electricity consumers. </span></em><br> <em><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> It has recently been revealed, through an access-to-information request, that cost overruns on New Brunswick’s Point Lepreau reactor re-build project were double the close to $1 billion previously reported – yet another example of the way nuclear costs are kept hidden to sustain the myth of cheap nuclear power.</span></em><br> <em><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> It simply does not make economic sense to re-build the aging Darlington Nuclear Station at a cost of 19 to 37 cents per kWh, when energy efficiency can reduce demand for only 3 cents per kWh and when we can import clean, hydro-electricity from Quebec for 4 cents per kWh.</span></em><br> <em><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> Since 2003 the Government of Ontario has signed thousands of contracts with renewable and natural gas-fired power producers. None of these suppliers are allowed to pass their cost overruns on to consumers. Nuclear power projects should be subject to the same market discipline.
