Every year, Canadian food waste amounts to $31 billion dollars. Not only are important resources being squandered as a result of this waste, but also it is environmentally damaging to our planet. When wasted food is thrown into landfill and begins to decompose, methane gas is released into the atmosphere, contributing directly to global warming. Road to Zero Waste is a local non-profit organization that works to address these problems by running workshops about food waste in various neighbourhoods and community spaces. The provincial government has filed a reference with the Court of Appeal challenging the federal government’s carbon tax legislation as unconstitutional, and several CAN-Rac members have successfully applied for intervenor status in the upcoming court case. That case goes to court the week of April 15 in Ontario. In this webinar, we will hear from the legal teams working with some of those intervenors - David Suzuki Foundation, Équiterre, and Environmental Defence Canada. On Saturday, April 13, for the first time representatives from the main occupational disease clusters will gather to learn from a delegation from Casale Monferrato, Italy and to develop a collective disease cluster strategy for Ontario. Casale Monferrato is a small northern Italian city near Torino which has been very hard hit by asbestos disease, including over 1000 cases of mesothelioma from a population of 36,000. The delegation will include doctors, an educator (who is also a city council member), a high school student and two labour activists. At this occupational disease summit, we will have reports from each of the main clusters - Sarnia, Peterborough, construction workers, Sault Ste Marie, Elliot Lake, Sudbury and the northern Ontario miners forced to breathe aluminum powder before every shift.
