The attack on crucial safety nets like Old Age Security (OAS) in the recent federal budget is part of the overall strategy to create a two-tiered society. Whether it’s two-tiered OAS, two-tiered wages, or two-tiered health care the federal budget creates a more unequal society. It rolls back gains of the last 50 years. This injustice compounds the already mounting attacks on Indigenous communities who speak out for economic equality and self-determination. From Attawapiskat to the Algonquins of Barriere Lake, Indigenous communities are having their rights and livelihoods eroded in the name of “jobs and growth”. Standing in solidarity with these communities and in support of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is a crucial part of the fight against austerity.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:black'> <b>LEARN FROM YOUTH AND STUDENTS</b><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span lang=EN-US style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:black'>On May 1, we will march in solidarity with the inspiring Maple Spring in Quebec, where over 200,000 students are engaged in a crucial fight against austerity. The massive student strike in Quebec – with its demands for accessible, affordable education – point the way toward a mass pan-Canadian anti-austerity movement. The mass walkout of thousands of high school students across BC, in solidarity with their teachers, is another strong example of the kind of solidarity we need to build against the concerted attack on workers’ rights from coast to coast. L’attaque contre les filets de sécurité cruciaux comme la Sécurité de la vieillesse (SV) dans le récent budget fédéral fait partie de la stratégie globale pour créer une société à deux niveaux. Que ce soit la SV, des salaires ou des soins de santé à deux niveaux, le budget fédéral crée une société plus inégale. Il fait perdre les gains qui ont été faits au cours des 50 dernières années. Cette injustice aggrave les attaques déjà croissantes contre les collectivités autochtones qui parlent en faveur de l’égalité économique et l’autodétermination. De la bande d’Attawapiskat à la bande des Algonquins du lac Barrière, les collectivités autochtones voient leurs droits et leurs moyens de subsistance érodés au nom « des emplois et de la croissance ». La grève étudiante massive au Québec – avec ses demandes pour une éducation accessible et abordable – montre la voie à un mouvement anti-austérité massif pancanadien. Le débrayage massif de milliers d’élèves du secondaire en C.-B., pour manifester leur solidarité avec leurs professeurs, est un autre exemple fort du type de solidarité dont nous devons faire preuve contre l’attaque concertée qui va à l’encontre des droits des travailleuses et travailleurs d’un océan à l’autre.
